Downtown ready for Holiday Open House
To kick off the holiday season, more than 30 downtown Sanford businesses are set to open their doors Sunday for the annual Downtown Sanford Holiday Open House.
The city’s seventh open house is from 1 to 5 p.m. Sunday, and the event encourages shoppers to peruse the downtown shops and see what the area has to offer, according to Downtown Sanford Inc. Executive Director David Montgomery.
“I think it’s great,” he said. “I think people want to see the businesses open outside the Monday through Friday, 9-to-5, 10-to-5. Most shoppers shop when they are off (work), and when you have an event on Sunday, you have more clientele.”
More shops are participating this year, Montgomery said, and many stores will offer special events, door prizes, sales or giveaways during the open house.
Sanford Area Chamber of Commerce President Bob Joyce said the open house was one that many citizens look forward to each year.
“It’s a tradition, although a fairly young tradition, that has become much beloved,” Joyce said.
There are many people who remember when the downtown area was bustling with activity every night, and this type of events bring about that same sense of excitement, he said. Plus, the holiday season is one of the most important times for merchants, he added.
Merchants make 30 percent or more of their profits during the holiday season, Joyce said, adding it was especially important to support local businesses as the country moves out of the recession.
“I certainly see this as a civic duty and a point of civic pride to shop and spend money locally to help merchants provide jobs and paychecks,” he said.
