• A youth appreciation banquet will be held at 6:30 p.m. at the Sanford Elks Lodge at 910 Carthage St., Sanford. The Sanford Elks host this annual event to honor the students of the month from Lee County and Southern Lee high schools. In addition, two students of the year and two other scholarship programs are recognized. Other awards will be presented to winners of the drug awareness poster contest, and this year's foreign exchange students will be recognized. The special guest will be Andy Bryan, who will become the superintendent of Lee County Schools on July 1.

• The Rufus Barringer Civil War Roundtable will meet at 7 p.m. at the Southern Pines Civic Club, located at Ashe and Pennsylvania avenues behind the tennis courts in Southern Pines. The Roundtable will welcome Kelly Hinson,10th generation North Carolinian and a Moore County native, who will present a living history of Anna Morrison, widow of Gen. "Stonewall" Jackson. • Maj. Dave Goetze, candidate for vice chairman of the North Carolina Republican Party, will be the guest speaker at the May meeting of the Harnett Republican Men's Club, set for 7 p.m. in room 149 of the Lundy Fetterman School of Business at Campbell University in Buies Creek. Create an owl, dog, cat, bunny or any whimsical creature while learning tips and tricks for painting with acrylics and using water-soluble pencils and graphite in this freestyle, funky painting class. • The Public Art Collaborative’s Art-Force Program will unveil a unique display of 12 light sculptures, the result of a partnership between N.C. artist Hoss Haley and local manufacturer Floorazzo Tile, as part of the Third Friday Gallery Walk and Celebration from 6-9 p.m. in downtown Siler City.

• Millstone Creek Orchards will celebrate the opening day of its 2013 season at 506 Parks Crossroad Church Road, Ramseur, N.C. — kicking off an opening weekend extravaganza. This year’s theme is adventure, and tonight's movie is “The Lorax.” Movies will start at sunset each Friday night. Additional nights may be scheduled in the case of inclement weather.

• Milo Holt's Siler City Film Festival will be held today at 5 p.m., with a Jordan Matthews High School Cafeteria Reception of the Stars, and continues tomorrow. The event will feature a catered buffet dinner ($15), and a short program followed by movie “The Undefeated” starring John Wayne.
