WEDNESDAY

• Sanford Jobseekers will meet from 8:30-10 a.m. at First Baptist Church. All who are looking for work are encouraged to come. This week’s program: George Harvey will talk about stretching the budget when you are unemployed. Call (919) 776-6137 for information.

• Cheerleading tryouts will be held for the 2013-2014 squads at Southern Lee High School today through May 24 from 3:45-6:30 p.m. in the Aux Gym. Cheerleaders should report to the gym dressed and ready to start no later than 3:45 p.m. each day. Students must be dropped off and picked up by the bus entrance.

• Gary Thomas Farms will offer seasonal produce from 8 a.m.-3 p.m. outside the Carthage Street entrance to Central Carolina Hospital. This is an event sponsored by CCH Auxiliary, with proceeds to benefit auxiliary projects. While picking up their favorite seasonal produce, patrons can visit the CCH Auxiliary This-n-That gift shop for a fresh-baked cookie and other items.

• Swim lessons registration will continue today from 3-6 p.m. at O.T. Sloan Pool. The cost is $29 per session for county residents and $39 per session for non-county residents. After May 27, register at Lee County Parks and Recreation, 2303 Tramway Road. Class size is limited, and enrollment will be accepted in person only on a first-come, first-served basis.

THURSDAY

• The local Three Rivers District of the Boy Scouts of America will hold its annual Distinguished Citizens Award Dinner at 6 p.m. at the Sanford Elk's Lodge. Tickets are $100 per person to the dinner, at which Donnie Oldham will be honored. Oldham is the president of Sanford Contractors and is acting director and chairman of the board of directors for the Lee County Economic Development Corporation. People interested in attending should RSVP to nicholas.long@scouting.org or call (910) 986-3929. In addition to Oldham, speakers at the dinner will include former N.C. Lt. Gov. Dennis Wicker, Lee-Moore Capital Company President Kirk Bradley and Lee County Manager John Crumpton, who is also commissioner of the local Scouting district.

• Dr. William Morris, the director of the OMM Department for the Campbell University School of Osteopathic Medicine, will speak about the new medical school at Campbell at 6 p.m. at the Sanford Lions Club Fairgrounds. Those wanting to attend and not eat, reservations are not required.

• Learn to paint with sponges and brushes during the Arty Party Beach Scene painting class with Shirley Patterson of My Little Art & Gift Shop from 6-8 p.m. at the Carolina Artists’ Colony, 148 S. Moore St. in downtown Sanford. Paint the beach scene of your dreams using acrylic paints with sponges and brushes on a 16-by-20 canvas. Students may bring a beverage and snack to enjoy.
