THURSDAY

• The local Three Rivers District of the Boy Scouts of America will hold its annual Distinguished Citizens Award Dinner at 6 p.m. at the Sanford Elk's Lodge. Tickets are $100 per person to the dinner, at which Donnie Oldham will be honored. Oldham is the president of Sanford Contractors and is acting director and chairman of the board of directors for the Lee County Economic Development Corporation. People interested in attending should RSVP to nicholas.long@scouting.org or call (910) 986-3929. In addition to Oldham, speakers at the dinner will include former N.C. Lt. Gov. Dennis Wicker, Lee-Moore Capital Company President Kirk Bradley and Lee County Manager John Crumpton, who is also commissioner of the local Scouting district.

• Dr. William Morris, the director of the OMM Department for the Campbell University School of Osteopathic Medicine, will speak about the new medical school at Campbell at 6 p.m. at the Sanford Lions Club Fairgrounds. • Cheerleading tryouts will be held for the 2013-2014 squads at Southern Lee High School today and tomorrow from 3:45-6:30 p.m. in the Aux Gym. Cheerleaders should report to the gym dressed and ready to start no later than 3:45 p.m. each day. Students must be dropped off and picked up by the bus entrance.

• Learn to paint with sponges and brushes during the Arty Party Beach Scene painting class with Shirley Patterson of My Little Art & Gift Shop from 6-8 p.m. at the Carolina Artists’ Colony, 148 S. Moore St. in downtown Sanford. Paint the beach scene of your dreams using acrylic paints with sponges and brushes on a 16-by-20 canvas. Students may bring a beverage and snack to enjoy. • Lee County Library, 107 Hawkins Ave., will be closed in observance of Memorial Day.

• The Sanford Farmers Market will be held from 9 a.m.-noon at Depot Park. Patrons can purchase locally grown, seasonal fresh fruits, vegetables and other produce. • A concealed-carry permit class will begin at 8 a.m. at Tramway Fire Department. There is a $30 non-refundable registration fee that will go toward the total class cost of $60. Class size will be limited. Participants will need to bring a handgun (or share with someone in class), ammunition (80 rounds), safety glasses, earplugs, holster, and a ball cap for the shooting range. • OT Sloan Pool opens to the public today. The cost is $3 per person.

• “Big Fish” author Daniel Wallace will be reading from his new novel, “The Kings and Queens of Roam,” at 11 a.m. at Davenport & Winkleperry Café, 18A Salisbury St., Pittsboro. The novel is a wild cavalcade of house-hunting ghosts, mysterious lumberjacks , blind orphans, Chinese mystics, poisonous butterflies and enchanted potions. Pittsboro’s indy bookstore Circle City Books & Music is sponsoring the event, and the author will sign books there after the reading. • A photo workshop with photographer David Blevins will be held from 3:30-8:30 p.m. at the White Pines Nature Preserve in Chatham County. The fee is $50.
