TODAY

• Gates will open at the 38th Annual Silk Hope Old-Fashioned Farmers’ Days at 9 a.m. at the Silk Hope Farm Heritage Park. Admission is $8 per person; kids under the age of 6 are admitted free. The day will open with a welcome, invocation, national anthem and flag-raising by Boy Scout Troop 911. The event will feature exhibits, demonstrations, entertainment and vendors, with music from 10 a.m.-4 p.m. In the Show Barn, there will be clogging and other entertainment from 11 a.m.-4 p.m. There will be a variety of food vendors, and visitors can join the Ruritans in the food tent for plates or sandwiches featuring home-cooked pintos, fried chicken tenders, pork barbecue, hotdogs and ice cream. There will be a kiddie tractor pull in the Show Barn, and at 4 p.m., a Parade of Power. At 5 p.m., gates open at the Ruritan Arena, food and drink available. At 6:30 p.m., there will be an antique tractor pull; admission is $5 per person, kids under the age of 6 are admitted free.

• Sprott Youth Center of Sanford will host a Flapjack Fundraiser at 7 a.m. at Applebee's, 1325 Plaza Blvd., Sanford. All funds raised at the pancake breakfast will be used by the Youth Center to offset operating costs throughout the year, as well as to provide educational programs for young men and women in the community. Tickets for the Flapjack Fundraiser are $7 and can be purchased by contacting Kennie Ellis at (919) 548-5577. Breakfast includes a short stack of pancakes, sausage and beverages.

• The Cumnock Community Annual Ice Cream event will begin at 7 p.m. on the Camel Back Bridge. Music will be provided by Junior Appalachian Musicians at 7 p.m., and ice cream will be served at 7:30 p.m. Attendees can bring a lawn chair and come out to enjoy ice cream and baked goods. The event is hosted by Cumnock Union Methodist Church.

• OT Sloan Pool will be open for public swim today (Saturday), Sunday and Labor Day (weather permitting) from 1-5 p.m. The pool will be closed to the public after Labor Day for the season.

• The Sanford Farmer's Market will be held from 9 a.m.-noon at Depot Park in downtown Sanford. All products are locally grown or hand crafted; credit, debit and SNAP EBT are accepted. • Lee County Library, 107 Hawkins Ave., Sanford, will be closed in observance of Labor Day.

• A musical worship service featuring Butler Hughes & Hayes and Mercy's Cross will be held at 6:30 p.m. at Coats Community Church, 275 N. McKinley St., Coats, to benefit the Anna Ruth Christian Retreat. Complete information is available by calling (910) 897-2881; no admission will be charged, but a love offering will be received.

SUNDAY

Church Services will be held in the Show Barn, provided by Joy Baptist Church, and there will be a variety of food vendors. Attendees can join the Ruritans in the food tent for plates or sandwiches featuring home-cooked pintos, fried chicken tenders, pork barbecue and hotdogs, as well as ice cream. There will be gospel singing in the show barn from 2-4:30 p.m. At 4 p.m., there will be a Parade of Power through the fairgrounds led by the 2014 Raffle Pickup. At 5 p.m. there will be raffle drawings and announcement of winners, and at 6 p.m., the Farm Heritage Park closes to the public.

• Lee County Library, 107 Hawkins Ave., Sanford, will be closed in observance of Labor Day.

• Belk is inviting engaged couples to create or add to their wedding registry during a bridal engagement party from 2-5 p.m. at 1065 Spring Lane, Sanford. Light refreshments will be served. Participating brides will receive a free gift from Carolee.

• The Moore County Chamber of Commerce will hold its annual culinary showcase from 6-8:30 p.m. at the Carolina Hotel. The showcase is held within the Pinehurst Food & Wine Festival, and guests will enjoy a glass of wine or beer of their choice from various vendors along with their food. Dishes will range from seafood to desserts and everything in between. A portion of the proceeds will fund scholarships for students in the culinary arts program at Sandhills Community College, and other proceeds support Chamber member programs.
