Spellers to square off at annual bee
Spellers — on your marks.
The 14th annual Beginning Life With Books Spelling Bee is set for Monday at the Dennis Wicker Civic Center. The registration and refreshment period is from 6-7 p.m., and the bee gets under way at 7 p.m.
Organized by the women educators of Delta Rho, local chapter of Delta Kappa Gamma Society International, this literacy fundraiser provides a copy of the children's classic "Goodnight Moon" to every baby born at Central Carolina Hospital.
Jimmy Randolph is bee master for the competition involving 32 four-member teams. Representing civic clubs, churches, families, schools and other group sponsors, the teams will vie for the title now held by the Trinity Lutheran Church Reformers.
Admission is free (donations are welcome), and the public is invited to come watch, listen and enjoy the sport.
Attendees are encouraged to contribute gently used children's books for the Book Buddy program of Communities in Schools.
