The Bible Speaks

Ask His forgiveness for our national sins

“Blessed is the nation whose God is the Lord” Psalm 33:12

John Adams, a founding father and second president of the United States, often spoke of the blessings that come from following the Lord God. He once wrote, “Suppose a nation in some distant region would take the Bible for their only law book, and every member should regulate his conduct by the precepts there exhibited….What a Utopia! What a paradise this region would be!” Adams rightly acknowledged that the blessings of God flow to the nation that follows His ways and His word. The writer of Psalm 33 would fully agree.

The Bible records the history of Israel; a nation whom God had chosen, and proves time and time again that their blessings were secured when, and only when, they were following His ways. God is the creator and sustainer of all men. “He who fashions the hearts of them all, He who understands all their works” (v.15) is the one who declares that blessing and favor come upon any nation that would endeavor to follow His commandments.

Because the Bible and history prove the truth of this Psalm, it is difficult to understand why our nation seems to be bent upon eradicating every mention of God from the public square. In the name of “freedom,” we are running heartily away from God and into the throes of sin which only enslaves us. When the inevitable troubles arise, we look to government to solve them and not God. We think more money and more laws and more programs will solve our problems, but those problems simply grow deeper and stronger. We turn to ourselves instead of the God who alone can deliver us. The troubles we face are not circumstantial, but moral and spiritual. When mankind changes and conforms to the God whose ways are right, then we will experience blessing instead of suffering. The eighteenth verse in this psalm says “behold the eye of the Lord is on those who fear Him, on those who hope for His lovingkindness, to deliver their soul from death and to keep them alive in famine.”

The Bible speaks of blessings that come to a nation that puts her hope in the Lord. If our President and Congress were to get on their knees and lead the nation in a national prayer of repentance and plea for His blessing, what would happen? I know what would happen. We would see a change in this nation like never before in our history. Our problems would begin to dissolve and we wouldn’t need to spend one thin dime to accomplish it. Believer, don’t wait for the President or Congress. Get on your knees and ask His forgiveness for our national sins and pray His blessing upon us. Don’t wait, keep praying until it happens!
