Four killed in Saturday morning accident
Four people will killed in a single-vehicle accident early Saturday morning at the 600 block of Swanns Station Road, according to authorities.
The vehicle ran off the road, hit a tree and then crashed into an unoccupied home, igniting the house and vehicle around 2:30 a.m., according to Lee County Emergency Services Director Shane Seagroves.
Several law enforcement agencies responded to the accident and, according to several family friends and various social media posts, Kathy Powers, Aaron Powers, Chris Baker and Becky Powell were killed in the Swanns Station Road accident. The North Carolina Highway Patrol dispatch did confirm the number of people killed and said no other information could be released at this time.
As of mid-morning Saturday, windshield glass, tires and twisted metal were sprawled across the yard of the home. James Byrd helped clear the debris Saturday and said his father used to live at the home before he passed away. Byrd's brother lives next door and called him.
"It's messed up pretty bad," he said of the house fire. "It could have been a lot worse but it was bad enough."
