Crash claims life of Sanford man; injures another
A Sanford man died late Monday, and another man was hurt, in the second fatal car accident reported in Harnett County this week.
According to the N.C. Highway Patrol, Vickie R. Womack, 59, of Sanford died in the single-car crash, which was reported at 10:39 p.m. near the intersection of Broadway and Knight roads close to the Lee County line. Womack, of Rice Road in Sanford, was reportedly driving with one passenger, identified as Charlie Sloan III, 62. Sloan’s address was not available.Sloan was transported to UNC Hospitals in Chapel Hill, where he was listed in serious condition Tuesday afternoon. Womack was reportedly taken to Betsy Johnson Regional Hospital in Dunn, where he was pronounced dead.
The vehicle, a 1991 Buick, was headed east on Broadway Road when it ran off the road, struck a culvert, overturned, and came to rest on the shoulder, according to the Highway Patrol.
No contributing factors were indicated in the incident report, said Highway Patrol office assistant Joanne Faberzak.
“According to the sergeant, he didn’t think it was speed or alcohol related,” she said. “We don’t know at this point. It is still being investigated.”
Area authorities responded Sunday night to a deadly crash on Cameron Hill Road, which took the life of 6-year-old Sara Perry of Cameron and hospitalized Edwin Joseph Baldwin, also of Cameron. Baldwin remained in intensive care Tuesday at Duke University Medical Center.
