Two area students picked as Triangle Rising Stars finalists
Although they did not win the contest, two area high school students — Ashley Griffin of Jordan-Matthews High School and Hayley Womack of Western Harnett High School — reached the top tier of the Triangle Rising Stars Award and Scholarship program.
Griffin was chosen as a finalist based on her performance as Fiona in the JM production of “Brigadoon.”
Womack was chosen as a finalist based on her performance as Belle in the Western Harnett production of “Beauty and the Beast.”
The Triangle Rising Star Awards is a member of The National High School Musical Theater Awards, a national program that unites high school musical theater awards programs from across the country under one roof.
Presented by Bailey’s Fine Jewelry, the Triangle Rising Star Awards (TRS) is a program that brings together area high school musical theater students to perform together and compete against one another for educational scholarships.
A Best Actor and Best Actress awards will be presented after a four-month long audition process. Over 35 applicants auditioned for the program, which has been narrowed down to 20 finalists, including 12 women and eight men.
The top two student winners will be provided with $1,000 academic scholarships along with an invitation to represent TRS in an all-expense paid trip to the National High School Musical Theater Awards in New York City for one week, June 25 – July 2. After a week of coaching, auditions and rehearsals, the students have a final performance “on Broadway.”
