The devil may have gone down to Georgia — but a famous musician with local ties is making a pit stop in Lee County.

The Charlie Daniels Band is scheduled to appear at the Aug. 17 Down South Music Festival to benefit a local nonprofit, Christians United Outreach Center of Lee County. Heading the iconic ensemble is North Carolina native Charlie Daniels — a Goldston High graduate, Grammy winner and Grand Ole Opry inductee.

Tickets went on sale this week and are $15 through the end of May.

The festival is organized by the Lights on Broadway, a group of Broadway community members who banded together to form a festival after the April 2011 tornado struck Lee County, according to LOB President Michelle Hunt.

"We are very excited, and we knew CUOC was in great need of donations," she said.

CUOC Executive Director Teresa Dew Kelly said she is ecstatic to be the charity selected for the annual concert.

"We are so excited," she said. "They hope to give us anywhere between $10,000 to $20,000. It's going to be wonderful."

With an annual $45,000 budget for food, the donation "would go a long way to meet the needs of the community,"she said.

The previous concerts were a great success, Hunt said, and the group is looking forward to bringing a country music giant to the area.

"We hope people come out and support this great event," Hunt said. "Come out and see a legend."

LOB Vice President of Logistics Patrick Kelly said he would like to see a large turnout the festival, which will benefit an important organization that serves local families.

"I hope they take away a good time and a sense of community by giving back to CUOC," he said.

CUOC is working with the LOB committee to speak with sponsors about the nonprofit's needs and how the concert is an important factor in meeting those needs.

"What a great way to bring out the community to help," Teresa Kelly said. "It's a great night of fun and fellowship, and a great way to give back to the community and those less fortunate."

CUOC serves more than 7,000 clients in Lee County and the surrounding areas and distributes an average of 47,855 pounds of food to more than 1,000 families each month.

The Charlie Daniels Band will be joined by Jim Quick and the Coastline, Crush and Huckleberry Blue during the benefit concert.

Huckleberry Blue is a Sanford-based band and the other two are from Raleigh, said LOB Board member Tonya Surratt, and these area acts are helping meet local needs.

"We know people will leave the concert having a great time," Surratt said. "We are so grateful to have CUOC here in this county, and we are trying to support them as they help feed Lee County."
