Copper transportation charges filed in Chatham

Chatham County Sheriff's Office deputies arrested more than a dozen people this week on charges of violating the recently enacted copper transportation law, according to a sheriff's office press release. In total, nearly 30 people have been charged in the multi-agency operation.

In 2012, the North Carolina General Assembly enacted a law requiring people who possess and intend to transport more than 25 pounds of copper material to get a transportation permit from the local sheriff and produce the permit at the business making the transaction. This would enable authorities to track those personnel who are selling copper. Detectives reportedly have been investigating a tremendous amount of copper thefts over the last few years and lawmakers enacted the law to better track those who cash in copper to local scrap metal dealers.

Chatham County deputies, with the assistance of N.C. Department of Motor Vehicles, Randolph County Sheriff's Office, Moore County Sheriff's Office, Alamance County Sheriff's Office, Lee County Sheriff's Office, Siler City Police Department and a host of other state and federal agencies worked together to investigate numerous copper-related thefts around the region, and Chatham County Deputies charged the following people with copper transportation violations:
