GOP candidate to compete for District 54 seat

Feb. 25, 2014 @ 04:59 AM

A Republican challenger entered the race Monday to represent N.C. House District 54.

Andy Wilkie, of Goldston, filed for the seat, which covers all of Chatham County and a portion of Lee County.

Wilkie ran three unsuccessful bids to join the Chatham County Board of Commissioners, but he said the losses were not uncommon for a Democratically controlled county.

“I believe the Chatham County taxpayers need to have a representative in the legislature,” he said.

The seat is now held by Sanford attorney Robert Reives II, a Democrat, who was recently appointed to the position after the resignation of Deb McManus. Reives filed for office last week.

Election officials within the Lee, Harnett, Chatham and Moore county offices all said filing has proceeded smoothly over the past two weeks. Filing ends at noon Friday.
