A suspicious package, which was left on a newspaper rack in Kendale Plaza Wednesday afternoon, turned out to be an expensive label maker in a black container — so concluded an investigation involving local authorities and Fort Bragg specialists.

The Sanford Police Department responded to a report from an anonymous caller of a suspicious package in the area around 2:30 p.m. Upon arrival, officers asked shop owners and customers if anyone knew who had left the box.

"Nobody knew who it belonged to," said Officer Michael Little. " ... Nobody knew who had left it."

At that point, police blocked the entrances to the shopping center and contacted the explosive ordinance disposal team at Fort Bragg to investigate the package.

Soldiers used a robot to examine the device and performed an X-ray on the box. Soldiers remained on scene three hours later.

"It turned out to be a label-making device," Little said. "A very expensive label-making device. ... It looks like one you can hook up to a computer."

After the package was deemed safe, police and other emergency personnel began clearing the scene.
