Second suspect in Chatham homicide arrested, charged
A local man wanted in connection with a fatal weekend shooting turned himself in to authorities Tuesday.
Jovon Maurice Marks, 33, of the 400 block of Olde Towne Road, Sanford, was arrested in Lee County and was charged with the first-degree murder of 35-year-old Roger Rottan Smith Jr. of Moncure, according to Chatham County Sheriff's Office Deputy Chief Gary Blankenship. Officers issued a warrant for Marks after the Chatham County shooting Saturday.
Officers found Smith in a vehicle dead with multiple gunshot wounds at the intersection of Mays Chapel and James Goldston roads, Blankenship said. Law enforcement agencies also found Roosevelt Terell Dixon, 25, of the 1000 block of Vance Street, with a gunshot wound to his leg. Dixon was also charged with first-degree murder.
According to witnesses, the victims and several other individuals were attending a party in the 500 block of Mays Chapel Church Road, Bear Creek, that was shut down at 1 a.m., according to a Chatham County Sheriff's Office release.
Dixon and Marks were both held at the Chatham County Detention Center under no bond.
