Candlelight vigil honors Conn. shooting victims
There will be a candlelight vigil tonight at Depot Park in downtown Sanford in honor of the victims of the Newtown, Conn., school shooting last week.
The vigil will begin at 7 p.m. Organizers, who are asking people to show up by 6:45 in order to help everything go smoothly, said it’s part of a movement inspired by the leader of Charlotte-based Mothers of Murdered Offspring to create vigils across the country tonight in homage to the children and adults killed at Sandy Hook Elementary School.
Margaret Murchison, news director at Sanford’s WFJA and co-organizer of the event, said it will be completely devoid of political speeches and pleas and will instead focus on commemorating the dead, who were almost all young students at the school.
There will be religious readings, songs, a speech and a lighting of candles. Parents are encouraged to bring their children.
The vigil in Sanford is being sponsored locally by the Sanford Area Chamber of Commerce, WWGP 1050 Classic Hits & Oldies, Lee County Partnership for Children, HAVEN In Lee County, Lee County Schools, Communities in Schools, American Red Cross, and the Coalition for Families.
