Workplace accident claims life of Lee Iron employee
A Lee Iron & Metal Co. employee was killed in a work-related accident Monday, authorities have confirmed.
Former Lee Iron CEO and current Sanford City Councilman L.I. "Poly" Cohen said his son-in-law, Martin Davis, was killed in the incident at 3 p.m. Monday.
Davis, whose title is listed as being in Post Consumer Operations on the company's website, was married to Cohen's daughter, Sharon. The couple has two children.
"Stuff happens, and you hope it doesn't, but it does sometimes," Cohen said. "There's nothing you can do."
According to a Sanford Police Department press release, a male employee was working on a forklift near "large, stacked bales of copper wiring when he exited the forklift."
"While off the forklift, one of the stacked bales fell on the male victim," according to the release. "The victim was later pronounced dead at the scene by medical personnel."
Lee Iron & Metal is located at 2219 S. Horner Blvd.
