BROADWAY OUR WAY: 'Fun for all' is philosophy behind annual festival
Broadway's population is set to triple in size as revelers flock to the sixth annual Broadway Our Way Festival Saturday.
The all-day gala features live music, a barbecue contest, an antique car, tractor and truck show, free children's activities, a vendor fair, food, a cornhole tournament and more throughout downtown Broadway.
“We hope everyone has a great time,” said Broadway Mayor Donald Andrews, who serves on the festival committee. “That is why we started this six years ago. We wanted to celebrate our community, and we wanted folks to come out (for a) family-orientated event.”
The day's events begin at 9 a.m. with the cornhole tournament and should wrap up with a street dance, which begins at 7 p.m.
“We want folks to come and have a good time and enjoy themselves,” Andrews said. “That is really the whole purpose behind it.”
Broadway Manager Bob Stevens said this event wouldn't be possible without the tremendous amount of effort expended by volunteers.
“It's thanks to all the ones who have done a lot of hard work,” Stevens said. “Mayor Donald Andrews and the committee members have been working on this since September. It just doesn't happen overnight. No one wakes up on Saturday and decides to hold a festival.”
Broadway Commissioner Janet Harrington oversees the festival's street fair and said more than 70 vendors are slated to fill the thoroughfare Saturday.
“We hope [those in attendance] have a great day with their families,” she said.
Vendors include food purveyors, politicians, crafts, jewelry, clothing, woodworking, pottery, book signings, civic organizations and animal groups, among others. Musicians scheduled to perform include Brick City South, Huckleberry Blue, Drymill Road Band, Destination Trio, Jus’ Right Bluegrass Band, Keith Henderson “Illusions of the King" and Street Dance with Gene Dickens and the Second Chance Band.
