For devotees of the "Andy Griffith Show," the performers coming to the Temple Theatre next month will be familiar and give rise to fond memories.

Rodney Dillard & The Dillard Band — the Darlings of "Andy Griffith" fame — will take the Temple stage on Aug. 22.

"For a lot of people in the community, the 'Andy Griffith' show is iconic like no other place in the world," said Christ deLambert, Temple's director of marketing and development — which he said makes the act "a cool fit."

Originally from Salem, Mo., the Dillard Band has been entertaining crowds across the country for more than 50 years and appeared as "The Darlings"on the show from 1963 to 1966.  In that recurring role, The Dillards were led by veteran character actor Denver Pyle, who played their father and jug player, Briscoe Darling. Maggie Peterson played Charlene Darling, their sister and the focus for the attentions of character Ernest T. Bass. In 1986, the Dillards reprised their role in the reunion show, "Return to Mayberry."

At the concert, deLambert said, "You'll see traditional bluegrass that's been electrified a little bit" — a style for which the Dillard Band is known. The group are also considered pioneers of Southern California folk rock, country rock and progressive bluegrass, according to a prepared statement from Temple Theatre, and "they are known to have directly influenced artists such as The Eagles and The Byrds, and in 1972, The Dillards joined Elton John on his first American tour."

On their current tour, Rodney Dillard leads the band as they play all the classics. The group's multi-decade staying power, according to deLambert, "speaks volumes about their ability to adjust, adapt and continue to entertain."

"It's an excellent opportunity," he added.
