SPD targets 137 suspects in ‘Operation Relentless’

Local police Capt. Dan Kehagias said he expects the streets — and local illegal drug scene — to be a little quieter after Thursday.

“We’ve definitely made a dent in the local drug trade,” Kehagias said. “We didn’t arrest every major drug dealer, but we made a dent. And everyone’s day comes sooner or later.”

The Sanford Police Department began executing search and arrest warrants involving 137 suspects after a year-long undercover operation dubbed “Relentless.” The Sanford Tactical Narcotics Team made 285 drug buys totaling 1,227 charges since April 2012 in what Kehagias called the largest undercover bust in the department’s history. As of Thursday afternoon, 34 suspects were in custody.

“I am pretty satisfied,” he said. “We’ve been busy all day and had a continuous flow. It will take a few days to arrest 137 people. We have some located who are in jail.”

Officers worked in teams to round up suspects with the help of numerous local and state partners, including the Lee County Sheriff’s Department’s Narcotics Division; the Sanford Police Department’s Selective Enforcement Unit, Community Policing, Uniform Patrol, and Detective Division.

The department targeted high-crime and high-gang activity areas, he said, and the operation focused on the influx of heroin in the area.

“Several of these warrants are for known gang members,” Kehagias said.
