Railroad track paving causes road closure

Railroad repairs, which began Monday, will force a portion of Wicker Street to be closed throughout the week.

Wicker Street, between Moore and Chatham streets, will be closed until this weekend to allow for repaving of the railroad tracks on Wicker, according to Cole Gaster, manager of operations for Atlantic Western Railway.

The construction crew began Monday morning tearing up the existing railroad tracks, and the area will be repaved Friday morning, he said.

"It's to prevent people's cars from being torn up or messing up the rims on the vehicles," Gaster said.

People will be able to turn off of Wicker onto Moore, but they will not be able to enter Depot Park from Wicker, he said. The area will be closed for the entirety of the week and could reopen as early as Friday night, Gaster said.

People can expect some delays, but they are able to take Carthage Street as a detour, Gaster said. There should not be any noise disturbances outside the immediate construction zone, he added.
