Airport manager announces end-of-month resignation
After six months at the helm of the Raleigh Executive Jetport of Sanford-Lee County, Airport Manager Brad Womble confirmed his resignation Tuesday — effective at the end of March.
“It had nothing to do with the airport,” Womble said Tuesday. “My fianceé (Cassie) is a doctor and has a great opportunity in South Carolina.
I plan to move with her, along with our young daughter, and have our family be in one place.”Womble, who is a Lee County native, said he plans to remain committed to the jetport and help it succeed.
“I have had to think about it, and we tried to work it out where I can still be there, but family trumps all other things,” he said. “Sanford being my hometown, I am not going to walk away and turn my back on them.”
Sanford-Lee County Airport Authority Chairman Carter Keller said authority members hate to see Womble leave, but they understand his desire to be with his family.
“Great things are happening at the airport and will continue to happen,” he said. “We wish Brad the best, and he’ll still be active as much as he can from where he is.”
Keller said the authority will discuss its next steps during an upcoming meeting. The panel’s regular meeting has been changed this month from Thursday, March 21, to Thursday, March 28, at 8 a.m. at the airport — located at 700 Rod Sullivan Road.
Throughout his time at the airport, Womble has done an excellent job, Carter said.
Womble succeed Dan Swanson, who resigned in September to spend more time operating his business at Raleigh Exec. Before Womble returned to Lee County, he worked as a contract pilot for several NASCAR teams based near Charlotte.
