Sanford Police investigating stabbing death
Police are investigating the death of a woman who was found stabbed at a local thrift shop Wednesday.
Officers responded to the Project Help Thrift Store, located at 916 Fields Drive, shortly before 11 a.m. to find the victim, Carol Bowling Chacon, 54, of Carthage, inside. Authorities had gone to the store on a report that a woman there was possibly injured.
According to a police press release, Chacon appeared to have been stabbed in her neck area. Her body will be transported to the Medical Examiner's office.
Police have not identified a suspect or released any further information, but said the matter remains under investigation. Calls to the thrift shop were not answered.
Sanford resident Lou Hinzman said the victim had previously been married to her son, describing her as "a sweet girl."
"She was very smart," Hinzman said, adding that Chacon also was skilled at sewing and able to make garments that looked store-bought. "This has shocked me so bad, I can't believe it."
