Cameron teacher charged with sex offenses involving student
Bond has been set at $1 million for a Moore County teacher charged with several sexual offenses, which stem from an alleged improper relationship with a student.
Gregory Kurt Smith, 50, of the 400 block of Flynn-McPherson Road, Cameron, on Wednesday was charged with five counts of sex offense with a student at a Moore County high school. Smith is no longer employed at Southern Middle School in Aberdeen, according to a Moore County School statement from Advisor for Community Relations Tim Lussier.
The student involved was an unidentified 17-year-old female at Pinecrest High School in Southern Pines, according to a Moore County Schools Resource Office incident report.
“An occurrence such as this deeply affects both our school system and our community,” according to the statement. “It is our intent to ensure that the involved student, as well as students at Southern Middle School, have counselors available to provide them with a sense of normalcy through these final weeks of the school year.”
The safety and well-being of the students is the first priority of the school system, the statement continues, and it “strives to ensure employees are held to the highest moral and ethical standards.”
