Pedestrian struck, killed by vehicle
A 17-year-old pedestrian was killed early Thursday in a one-car collision on U.S. 15/501 near Voit Gilmore Lane, according to authorities.
The youth has been identified as Timothy Jeremiah Reeder, 17, of 100 Rider Lane, Southern Pines.
The N.C. Highway Patrol reportedly responded to the incident at 5:13 a.m. According to a release from the N.C. Department of Public Safety, William Gardner Mullen, 42, of Southern Pines, was heading north on U.S.15/501 in a 2009 Nissan Altima, and two juveniles were standing in the car’s lane of travel.
“The driver swerved, avoiding a 15-year-old juvenile, but unfortunately struck the second juvenile,” the release states. “As a result of the collision, the second juvenile died.”
Speed and alcohol reportedly were not a factor in this accident.
Upon completion of the investigation, the State Highway Patrol will confer with the Moore County District Attorney’s Office with its findings, according to the release, but based on the preliminary investigation, it is not anticipated that charges will be forthcoming against the driver.
