What began as five men in the Pinecrest Inn’s piano bar has turned into a 40-member chorus dedicated to musical fellowship and helping children in need.

Based in Moore County, the Golf Capital Chorus, a chapter of the Barbershop Harmony Society, is looking to grow its membership in neighboring areas, including Lee County.

“I think we want, first of all, to have fun singing,” said Ron Sutton, vice president of public relations and marketing. “… The primary purpose is to provide the men with an experience in singing and fellowship.”

With most of the members from Moore County or Fayetteville, the chorus is pushing for more Lee County members, he said.

“Anyone can come to the rehearsal,” he said. “Once you get there, and get involved, you’ll have a lot of fun. So we are trying to reach out to more people.”

The singers will take men of all ages, said Membership Vice President John Arnold, but would like to see some younger men from Lee County join.

“There are some good singers in Lee County,” he said. “We are reaching out all around the area.”

The a cappella group holds weekly rehearsals from 7-9 p.m. Mondays at Community Presbyterian Church, located at 125 Everett Road, Pinehurst, and encourages all men with a musical bent to learn more about the chorus.

“You don’t have to be a master musician or read music, but be a halfway decent singer,” Sutton said.

The men, split into quartets, deliver singing valentines each year and hold an annual concert in November to raise funds for children’s charities in Moore County, he said.

“We get together and sing together,” Sutton said. “Over the years, we’ve made it our mission to raise as much money (as we can) for children’s charities.”

The chorus has contributed nearly $85,000 to the Sandhills Children’s Center and donated more than $270,000 to charity since its founding in 1981.

“I hope the singers have a lot of fun and enjoy themselves,” Arnold said. “We hope they learn a lot, and we expect them to.”
