One suspect arrested, one sought following fatal weekend shooting
Update — 11:52 a.m., Tuesday: Jovon Maurice Marks was arrested this morning in Lee County with the assistance of the Lee County Sheriff’s Office, according to a Chatham County Sheriff's Office release.
Chatham County authorities have placed one Sanford man in custody and are searching for another considered "armed and dangerous" following a fatal weekend shooting.
The Chatham County Sheriff's Office charged Roosevelt Terell Dixon, 25, of the 1000 block of Vance Street, Sanford, with first-degree murder and issued a murder warrant for Jovon Maurice Marks, 33, of the 400 block of Olde Towne Road, Sanford, Sunday. Marks is still at large and thought to be armed, according to a sheriff's office release.
Law enforcement officers responded to the 500 block of Mays Chapel Church Road, Bear Creek, Saturday morning after receiving reports of several gunshots being fired. Authorities found Roger Torran Smith Jr, 35, of the 7500 block of Moncure Pittsboro Road, Moncure, dead after he was shot multiple times inside a vehicle at a nearby intersection. Dixon was also reportedly shot in the leg and transported to UNC Hospital.
According to witnesses, the victims and several other individuals were attending a party that was shut down at 1 a.m.
The suspects and victim appear to have known each other, and the sheriff's office has had contact with the suspects in the past, according to Chief Deputy Gary Blankenship.
"The case is still very active, and it is possible more charges are pending," Blankenship said.
Dixon is being held at the Chatham County Detention Center under no bond. Anyone with information concerning Marks's whereabouts is encouraged to contact the sheriff's office at (919) 542-6116.
