Baby boy makes New Year's Day debut
She didn't get to watch the countdown in Times Square or spend the night partying with friends and family, but Ebony Spears had a night she's likely to remember better than any typical New Year's Eve revelry — having her first child.
Spears, an 18-year-old Sanford woman, gave birth to Zaylen Amir Berryman at 4:57 a.m. on Tuesday, New Year's Day, and said later that afternoon that she's excited to be a mom.
The healthy baby boy was due several days ago but wasn't delivered until early this morning — making him the first baby born in Sanford (or at least the first one at Central Carolina Hospital) in 2013.
"It's been good so far," Spears said just after her son turned eight hours old. He was healthy enough to go straight to his parents' care, and the new mother said except for some expected soreness, she was feeling fine.
The baby's father, 16-year-old Sharrod Berryman, said he was feeling "a little nervous" about being a dad, but he looked the part while cradling his son and showing him his first cartoons in the hospital room.
Spears said she doesn't know when she might get discharged, but since Zaylen was born without complications and at a strong size — 7 pounds, 3 ounces and 21 inches — there's a good chance he'll be out enjoying the rest of 2013 soon.
