After going through various planning stages over the last five years, The Sanford Rotary Club has begun work on the Don Buie Memorial Trailhead.

Located near the intersection of Douglas Drive and Boone Circle, it is the current northern end of the Endor Iron Furnace Greenway and will feature a paved parking lot and a trail to a gazebo with benches and a water fountain for walkers and bikers. It is designed to blend in without distracting from the natural beauty of the surrounding woodlands and will serve as the beginning point for walking to the Endor Iron Furnace.

The Sanford Rotary Club has funded the project through its annual charity gala and has received help from local businesses. Lee Moore Capital and its president, Kirk Bradley, gifted the scenic land to The Sanford Rotary Club Charitable Foundation Inc. Sanford Contractors Inc., under the direction of President Donnie Oldham and Secretary/Treasurer Tom Haislip, who, along with his father, was a past member of The Sanford Rotary Club, donated the earthmoving and grading work that was completed Jan. 11.

Alan Dossenbach, current President of The Sanford Rotary Club, expressed official appreciation in a prepared statement to “these and other corporate citizens who help make Sanford and Lee County great, and without whose help such an undertaking would have been impossible.”

When the trailhead opens in spring or early summer of this year, The Sanford Rotary Club Charitable Foundation Inc. will hold a dedication in honor of Past President Don Buie and present the City of Sanford a deed to the property.
