Survivor of train strike identified
The man struck by a train in downtown Sanford on Saturday, who has been identified as 47-year-old Richard Lee Spears, remained hospitalized Monday with injuries sustained from the incident.
The Sanford Police Department confirmed Monday morning that Spears, who lives in Sanford, was hit by a southbound train while walking along Wicker Street at about 6:40 p.m. The accident occurred just feet from Depot Park while a concert was going on there, and several people reportedly rushed to the man's aid, with at least one man performing CPR until emergency responders arrived at the scene.
Spears was transported to UNC Hospitals in Chapel Hill, according to Sanford police. Spears was still at the hospital, in critical condition, as of approximately 10:30 Monday morning, according to hospital officials.
