Egg hunts plentiful in Central Carolina

Apr. 11, 2014 @ 05:01 AM

Like foxes in a hen house, children all over will soon be descending eagerly on eggs — plastic ones filled with candy, but eggs nonetheless.

In the Central Carolina area, this weekend and next weekend will play host to many Easter egg hunts in Sanford, Lillington, Pittsboro and Siler City that are open to any and all who want to come.

“The way we see it, we just want to have an opportunity to meet people in the community and love on them and help them, and also help the kids have a good time,” said Pastor Thadd McElreath of Connect Church, which is holding an Easter egg hunt this Saturday at noon at Kiwanis Children’s Park, near the intersection of Wicker and Carthage streets.

Half a mile away, at the Kiwanis Family Park at 1800 Wicker Street, the Central Carolina Jaycees will hold an Easter egg hunt of their own. This year, they’re adding something that group members said they don’t think has been done before: a separate egg hunt for kids, and even adults, with disabilities and special needs.

One of the organizers is club member Erin Beasley, who has a child with Down syndrome. She said other egg hunts around Sanford are held specifically for children with special needs, but she wanted one that let them mingle at least during other activities, if not during the egg hunt itself.

“I want to integrate the special needs kids in with typical children,” she said. “And, of course, they can do the special needs hunt or take part with the other kids if they feel up to it. But it is nice having their own and not being stampeded by children racing for the eggs.”

But whether attendees are going to either of the Kiwanis parks or to yet another Easter egg hunt this weekend or next, they are reminded to bring a basket and, if required, register ahead of time.
