‘A city of faith’

Apr. 14, 2014 @ 11:56 AM

City leaders are hoping a National Day of Prayer breakfast will unite the community and foster peace.

The Mayor’s Prayer Breakfast will begin at 7 a.m. May 1 at the Harper Center at First Presbyterian Church, located at 203 Hawkins Ave., with remarks from Sanford Mayor Chet Mann and keynote address by the Rev. Hector La Chapelle of St. Stephen the First Martyr Catholic Church, Sanford.

“I hope what people take away from this is that prayer is good for a community and we are a city of faith,” Mann said.

Additional speakers will include the Rev. Ronald Stoker of First Presbyterian Church, the Rev. Linda Smith of First Calvary Baptist Church and the Rev. Iris Jordan of Fair Promise AME Zion Church.

If people participate in this event, they will see an exponential improvement in their day, Mann said, adding, “People need to try and understand that prayer is a way of healing and getting a community together.”

Mann said he hopes this tradition will continue for years to come.

The local YMCA usually sponsors a breakfast, but Mann said the organization was interested in a secondary role this year.

“As a former YMCA board member, I wanted the city to have a bigger part, especially this year when the community could really come together for a day of prayer,” he said.

Other National Day of Prayer services include a noon service at the flagpole at the Sanford Municipal Center, located at 224 E. Weatherspoon St., a service at 5:30 p.m. at Depot Park in downtown Sanford and at a 6:30 p.m. service at New Hope Baptist Church.

Mann said interested parties can contact the Sanford Area Chamber of Commerce by April 20 to sponsor a table for $60. This will cover the cost of breakfast, he said, and make sure the event is open and free to the public. People interested in sponsoring a table can contact the Chamber at (919) 775-7341 or by visit www.sanord-nc.com.
