Central Carolina prepares for National Night Out
Sanford and Lee County will play host to a number of community gatherings as a part of the 31st annual National Night Out on Tuesday.
"We started doing National Night Out in '07," said Lee County Sheriff Tracy Carter. "It's been a success every year. I think this year will be a success as well. Any time you can get people together and fellowship, talk and get to know who the neighbors are, that's just good stuff."
The Lee County Sheriff's Office will be hosting events at 12 locations from 6 p.m. until 8 p.m., and hot dogs, chips and drinks will be served at each site.
"We're all in this thing together," Carter said. "The more we can get people working together as a team to make things happen, it's just a good thing. Getting to know the neighbors. It's just a positive environment. We're going to have law enforcement officers at each of the locations in the county. I know the city is as well."
The city, which has been involved in National Night Out since 1996, will sponsor 33 locations this year.
"I think the turnout is going to be really big," said Sanford Mayor Chet Mann. "It's just really important as we build communities that neighborhoods gets to know each other. It's a great time to meet neighbors, to meet local officials, to take care of each other and share some fellowship. I think it's one of the highlights of the year for the city."
