Fire displaces woman; two firefighters hurt
A house fire on West McIntosh Street displaced one local woman and injured two city firefighters Monday night.
Fire was shooting out of a home in the 500 block of West McIntosh Street at 9:16 p.m., said Sanford Fire Chief Wayne Barber.
“Flames were coming out of the windows and kitchen, and our guys were pulling a hose around the house,” he said. “There was a three- or four-foot drop down a stairwell leading to the basement, and one (firefighter) fell in.”
A combination of smoke and lack of light contributed to his fall, and another firefighter had smoke inhalation, he said.
Both went to Central Carolina Hospital for treatment and were released, said Barber, who did not disclose their names.
The fire started in the kitchen, but the cause remains unknown, according to Sanford Fire Department Division Commander and Fire Marshal Ken Cotten.
The local American Red Cross provided the resident funds for a hotel room and food, said local American Red Cross Coordinator Abby Cameron.
