LEE COUNTY: Commissioners to discuss place for new economic organization
The former Buggy Factory on Chatham Street may be put to new use, according to the Lee County Board of Commissioners' upcoming meeting agenda.
Commissioners will discuss possibly leasing the building to house the new economic development organization called Sanford-Lee County Partnership for Prosperity, which merges the Sanford Area Chamber of Commerce and Lee County Economic Development Corporation, and several joint county-city departments during its 6 p.m. meeting Monday at the Lee County Government Center.
City and county leaders and staff members have discussed housing the Planning Department Administration, Community Development Black Grant and Grand Administration, Downtown Development Inc., Inspections, Code Enforcement, Environmental Health and GIS under one roof for a number of months, according to the commissioners's agenda.
"Recently the need to not only locate these departments but the new Chamber/EDC organization, along with them at a central location have been part of the task force discussions," according to the agenda.
The Buggy Factory is one location due to its size and nearby parking that could be used for this purpose. According to the agenda, there are not many buildings that could house up to 40 employees.
Other agenda items include:
* Three public hearings. One to rezone two acres of land from residential restricted to residential agricultural on N.C. 87 near the intersection of Commerce Drive and two to update language to the Unified Development Ordinance regarding the Board of Adjustment procedures and wireless telecommunications towers.
* Purchasing four COLTS vans.
* Consider bids of $48,990 and $67,960 for Touch Construction LLC and Robert Strickland Construction Inc., respectively for Community Development Block Grants.
