Man riding lawnmower dies in traffic collision
A Lee County man was struck and killed by a pickup truck while riding his lawnmower Thursday afternoon.
Otis "Sonny" Colvin, of the 2900 block of South Plank Road, died after a burgundy and silver Chevrolet truck hit his lawnmower along South Plank Road around 5 p.m., according to his stepdaughter, Cheryl Colvin.
"I don't know how this happened," she said.
The driver of the truck, William Daniel Lamonds, 29, of Sanford, was not injured during the collision. According to the Highway Patrol, Colvin traveled into the southbound lane of South Plank Road on his lawnmower as Lamonds was driving south on the road. Colvin was then thrown across the road where he later died.
Speed, alcohol or drugs were not factors in the incident and Lamonds will not be charged, according to the Highway Patrol.
Colvin was 55 years old.
Other family members and neighbors were huddled together as highway patrol troopers measured the distance between the truck and the red riding lawnmower at 6:15 p.m. At the foot of a nearby driveway was a sign that read, "Look twice, save a life. Motorcycles are everywhere."
The North Carolina State Highway Patrol, Lee County Sheriff's Office and the Northwest Pocket Volunteer Fire Department all responded to the accident.
