Duke Energy says it will not build two new reactors at the Shearon Harris nuclear plant in Wake County.

The News & Observer of Raleigh reported (http://bit.ly/YrzQIL ) Charlotte-based Duke has told the Nuclear Regulatory Commission that new reactors will not be needed for at least 15 years.

A single reactor at Shearon Harris has been generating electricity for 25 years.

Duke told the Nuclear Regulatory Commission that forecasts show new nuclear units will not be needed for at least 15 years.

It's the second nuclear project Duke has canceled since acquiring Raleigh-based Progress Energy in July. Duke said earlier this year it will not repair the closed Crystal River nuclear plant in Florida.

Duke does still have plans for new reactors near Gaffney, S.C. and in Levy County, Fla.
