Theft, damage reported at Municipal Golf Course
The U.S. Open has increased enthusiasm for golf in this area — apparently even among criminals.
Sometime between 10 p.m. Friday and 6:40 a.m. Saturday, one or more people stole or damaged about $10,000 worth of equipment at the city-owned Sanford Municipal Golf Course, according to authorities.
The most expensive item taken was an $8,000 battery charger, although $1,200 worth of batteries and a $150 air compressor also were stolen, according to police reports.
A golf cart also sustained $900 worth of damage in the break-in — in which someone reportedly pried through a wall, damaged a lock and also stole various tools of an unknown value.
There's no suspect at the moment, although police reportedly recovered a gray hoodie jacket at the scene that has been entered as evidence. Detective Sgt. Vinny Frazer said Monday the investigation is ongoing.
