As shoppers began waiting in line for Black Friday sales as early as Monday morning in cities around the country, some have called on Americans to rethink their priorities during this holiday — which they say is supposed to be about giving thanks.

So The Herald asked some elementary school students from J.R. Ingram to put it all in perspective and write about what they're thankful for this year. Here's what a few of them had to say.

Xavier Cercy: "I'm thankful for my life because I'm happy to be alive."

Eden Nickole Barnes: "I am thankful for my family, my dogs, farm and farm animals."

Jaheim Percell: "What I'm thankful for is my mother when she got a job and she helps out my family."

James Bradley: "I am thankful for my mom, grandma and grandpa. At Thanksgiving I get to help my mom make cheesecake, pie and mashed potatoes."

Brooke Esporas: "I am thankful for a nice family because having a family that loves me is great and makes me feel good. I am also thankful for freedom because if we did not have freedom, life would be way harder than it is."

Victor Castillo: "I am thankful for having a good life and for having a really good family. I am also thankful for having a stepdad in the military so he can protect all my family from the dangers that will come upon us."

Delaina Butler: "I am thankful for food. I love pumpkin pie."

Phoebe Zheng: "I am thankful for education, life, natural resources, and everything, everybody, every life we have."

Tyler Berndt: "I am thankful for my mom and dad. We play pin the tail on the turkey at Thanksgiving."

Jalen (no last name given): "I am thankful for my civil rights because people in the past did not have civil rights. Now America is a better place."

Jose (no last name given): "What I'm thankful for is God, parents, life, food and lots more. If you are mean to your parents, don't. They are very thankful for you. They try their best, so you should always try your best, too. I'm thankful for what I have. Be thankful for what you have."

Ella Kellogg: "I am thankful for my mommy and daddy and two brothers. My favorite food to eat during Thanksgiving is turkey."

Priscilla Whitten: "I am thankful for my family. At Thanksgiving, I play with the bouncy ball outside with my brother. Then we come in and eat turkey."

Hakeem Cole: "I am thankful for my mom and dad and brother. On Thanksgiving, we invite people to our home. My dad says the blessing before we eat Thanksgiving dinner."

Noah Livengood: "I am thankful for my family and papa. Papa comes to my house for Thanksgiving. My favorite food is mashed potatoes and turkey."

Savannah Birdsong: "I am thankful for my family, and I'm thankful for my father's job because he makes a lot of money that he uses to give us a roof over our heads and gives us food."

Alyssa Collier: "I am thankful for my family. We play games like checkers on Thanksgiving. We eat chicken and mashed potatoes."

Holly Clark: "I am thankful for everything I have, like clothes, shelter, money, food, knowledge and my family."

Ryan Simmons: "I am very thankful for my family, food on my table, my religion and my health. I am glad to have my friends, education and my existence on this world."

Hannah Huffman: "I'm thankful for my family (and) I'm thankful for school because I can learn new things."

Gabe Welch: "I am very thankful for all the things my family has given me to survive and be happy. I am also thankful for the wonderful world that God has blessed us with."

Logan Fike: "I am thankful for my family. I love Thanksgiving because we have turkey and mashed potatoes with gravy."

Jay'Mauri Griffin: "I am thankful for Thanksgiving. I get to play tag with my cousin. Then we get to eat pumpkin pie."
