Country music artist Mark Wills — who charted six top-10 singles and was named the top new male vocalist of the year in 1999 — is set to perform at the Temple Theatre this fall.

Doors will open at 7 p.m. for the Nov. 16 show at the Temple, located at 120 Carthage St., and the $35 tickets will sell fast, according to Temple Marketing and Development Director Chris deLambert.

"Everyone has been taken aback that an artist of this magnitude is playing here," deLambert said. "This is the biggest act in downtown Sanford."

The Temple is always looking to expand the programs it offers, he said, and the venue affords audience members an intimate, live concert. Pending the success of this performance, deLambert said the Temple would like to host similar, larger concerts.

"The reception will tell the tale," he said. "If it is well received and people come out, we will do more things like that. But we can't fit a round peg into a square hole. We are here to entertain folks."

Temple Producing Artistic Director Peggy Taphorn agreed and said as the economy improves, she hopes to offer more special events for the community.

"We want the Temple to be a venue for everyone," she said. "Some people may not be theater folks, so we want to offer more concerts. As we offer more special events, I want the Temple to be a place people get used to coming to."

This show is an excellent opportunity for people to see a local show with national-caliber talent, Taphorn said.

"We have a big country music fan base here, so we are hoping people will come out," she said. "There are not usually big bands that play these intimate venues at this price. This is a lot of bang for your buck."

Tickets and additional information are available online at www.templeshows.com or at the Temple box office.
