Apr. 09, 2013 @ 05:01 AM

Dozens of vacancies on various county and city boards are slated to be filled in the coming months. providing residents an opportunity to serve their community.

Lee County Commissioners will make 41 appointments to 13 boards at its June 17 meeting, while Sanford City Council is set to make 26 appointments to 10 local boards by the end of June. Applications for Lee County's appointments are available online at www.leecountync.gov and at County Clerk Gaynell Lee's office, located at 408 Summit Ave, and are due at 5 p.m. May 17.  Applications for Sanford's appointments are available online at www.sanfordnc.net and at the Sanford Municipal Center, located at 225 E. Weatherspoon St., and due to City Clerk Bonnie White by June 1.

The city boards are an excellent way to give back to the greater community, said Sanford Mayor Cornelia Olive.

"It's great experience for someone to see how they will enjoy public service," she said. "You can explore what different options there are, and you learn about government in the process."

Lee County Commissioner Chairman Charlie Parks agreed, saying he'd like to see the seats filled by people willing to commit to the board and county.

"We want people who have some expertise in the subject," Parks said. "Secondly, we want people to be interested in that particular board subject matter so they will commit the time that is needed."

Both Lee and White said they've received some applications, including some from present seat holders who plan to reapply. Sanford has a new Environmental Affairs Board this year with seven vacancies, White said, and those interested in that board should turn in applications as soon as possible.

"We need folks who are open-minded and willing to study because this board does require serious thought," Olive said. "And with the issue of fracking before us, it's not something we can take for granted."

With nine spots open on the county's Agriculture Advisory Board, Lee said it may be difficult to fill.

"The agriculture board has never been completely filled," she said. "That will be a hard one this go around."

The Lee County Board of Education is also accepting applications for one appointment to the Central Carolina Community College Board of Trustees. Applications are due at noon on April 26, and applications are available online at www.lee.k12.nc.us. There are no vacancies on Broadway's boards or commissions.
