BRICK CAPITAL CLASSIC: Teams converge in Sanford for marching band contest

Nov. 01, 2013 @ 05:01 AM

Breaking from their typical post on the sidelines — cheering their respective football teams to glory — hundreds of high school musicians will be the main attraction Saturday.

The 34th Brick Capital Classic is scheduled from 1 to 8 p.m. at Lee County High School, located at 1708 Nash St. Admission is $5, with free admission for children under the age of 5.

The annual band competition is set to bring in 18 bands from across North Carolina and Virginia, and will include a musical exhibition by the Lee County High School's Marching Yellow Jackets, according to Lee County High School Band Booster President Tracy Melby.

"We host it every year, and it's a great chance to get the bands together," she said. "And it's one of our biggest fundraisers to support the marching band."

Each band will perform their season show and be judged based on music, general effect, marching and visual ensemble, among other criteria, Melby said. The funds generated from the march are used to purchase new uniforms, pay for competition fees and cover instrument repairs, she said.

On average, there are 5,000 attendees — including more than 1,500 participating students. There are five different classes, based on size of the school, and each of the top three bands in each class will receive a trophy.

"I hope the students realize marching band is a great experience that can broaden their artistic abilities," Melby said. "As for the competition, I hope they will congratulate each other."

Organizing the season's show is extremely time consuming and difficult, she said, adding that she hoped spectators will appreciate the students' hard work.

"I hope they have pride in their community, and that it continues to show throughout the year," Melby said.
