One man killed, another wounded in shooting
One local man is dead and another was charged with murder after a weekend shooting at an area bar, according to police.
Jonathan Owens, 29, of the 400 block of Dudley Avenue, was shot in the upper left part of his chest outside of Carli's South Bar & Grill, located at 1512 Westover Drive, early Sunday morning, said Sanford Police Capt. David Smith. Owens was transported to Central Carolina Hospital and later died from his wounds, Smith said.
Christopher McCormick, 22, of the 1200 block of Burns Drive, was charged with felony first-degree murder shortly after the shooting and is scheduled to appear in court on March 27, Smith said. He is being held at Lee County Jail with no bond.
A confrontation reportedly broke out between McCormick and Owens inside of the bar that escalated as the two went outside, Smith said.
"According to several witnesses, (the suspect) fired numerous rounds and struck (Owens) in the upper left chest from the back," Smith said.
The argument stemmed from an alleged past drug deal, Smith said.
"Neither one of these two are law-abiding citizens," Smith said. "They both have a criminal record."
There were several hundred people in attendance at the bar for a private party, Smith said, adding that the party spiraled out of control.
"There were several fights going on, and it was real hectic and chaotic," Smith said. "People were out of control."
The North Carolina Highway Patrol and the Lee County Sheriff's Office were called to the scene for crowd control, and McCormick was struck by a TASER before being arrested, Smith said.
"[Highway Patrol Troopers] were told [McCormick] had a firearm on his possession, and he made a movement to indicate to the officers that they were in threat," Smith said.
Several vehicles were damaged by gunfire, and a second gunshot victim was reported to police Sunday afternoon, Smith said. Bryan Keith Williams Jr., of the 1200 block of Fern Ridge Drive, was shot in the face and was released from the hospital the same day, Smith said.
