JOSEPHINE ATKISSON HILL

BURLINGTON — Josephine Atkisson “Pete” Hill, age 95, of Twin Lakes Community, Burlington, NC passed away on Wednesday, March 5, 2014.

She was born on August 12, 1918 in Greensboro, NC to the late John David and Margaret Ruth Wicker Hill. Pete moved with her family to Sanford in 1921 where she attended elementary through high school. She graduated in 1929 from East Carolina Teachers College (now East Carolina University) with a double major in Mathematics and History. While at ECTC she was editor of her school yearbook, the Tecoan, voted “Most Original” by her class, a member of Emerson Society and Who's Who in American Universities and Colleges. Pete joined Saco-Lowell in Sanford in the early forties as their first female tool designer, later rising to the rank of chief tool designer. Her work moved her to Easley, SC in 1977. After retiring in 1984, Pete enjoyed playing bridge and traveling with family and friends. She also served in the VFW Auxiliary. In 2004, she moved to Twin Lakes Community in Burlington, NC. Most importantly, Pete loved God. She was a lifelong Methodist who from a young age was very active in her church. Whether it was leading a four-week Methodist Youth Caravan through Eastern, NC, teaching Sunday School, working on various committees or representing her church at annual conference, no matter what the calling, Pete loved serving her Lord and Savior through her church. She will be deeply missed.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her brothers: John W. Hill and James D. Hill, and sisters: Louise H. Farnsworth and Billie H. Bonner, a nephew and great-great-nephew.

Her survivors include nephews: Hugh Farnsworth, III (Chris) of Blythewood, SC; Michael P. Farnsworth (Pam) of Fort Meyers, FL; John W. Cochran, MD (June) of Irving, TX; Robert A. Bonner, Sr. (Mary) of Williamston, NC; Patrick D. Hill (Tonya) of Durham, NC; Robert P. Hill (May) and Michael J. Hill (Pressly) both of Burlington, NC.; nieces: Ruth Farnsworth Doherty of Silver Springs, MD; Anne Hill Yarborough (Steve) Winston-Salem, NC; 17 great-nephews, 13 great-nieces, 16 great-great-nephews and 13 great-great-nieces.

A memorial service will be held at St. Luke’s United Methodist Church in Sanford, NC on Saturday, March 8, 2014 at 12 noon with Rev. Jaye White officiating. The family will receive friends at the funeral home on Saturday from 10-11 a.m. and burial will be held immediately following the visitation at Shallow Well Church Cemetery.

SALLY ANN CALHOUN

CARTHAGE — Sally Ann Calhoun, 55, of Carthage, died Wednesday (3/5/14) at Central Carolina Hospital.

A celebration of life will be held today at 6:30 p.m. at Cox Memorial Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Jimmy Calhoun officiating. The family will receive friends immediately following the service at the funeral home.

She was born in Mountain Home, Idaho, on Sept. 4, 1958, to Cranford Gray and Annmarie Hergert Calhoun.

She is survived by three children, Jimmy Calhoun and wife Kyle of Virginia, Chad Calhoun and wife Adrienne of Beulaville and Anna Lucas and husband Michael of Carthage; parents, Cranford Gray and Annmarie Hergert Calhoun of Carthage; one brother, Robert Henry Calhoun and wife Diane of Cameron; and five grandchildren.

MIGUEL HIGUERA BUITRON

SANFORD — Funeral Mass for Miguel Higuera Buitron, 43, of Sanford, who died Monday (3/3/13), was held at 11 a.m. Wednesday at St. Stephens Catholic Church by Fr. Robert Ippolito. Burial followed at the church cemetery.

Pallbearers were friends of the family.

DEAN ROBIN SMITH

SANFORD — Funeral service for Dean Robin Smith, 52, who died Friday (2/28/14), was held Thursday at 2 p.m. at Eastside Pentecostal Church with Pastor Aleveolus Smith and Pastor Ernest Hinson officiating. Burial was at Womack Cemetery.

Soloist was Tonya Gray.

Pallbearers were nephews and cousins.

FREDERICK JAMES SHEARIN

SANFORD — Frederick James “Jim” Shearin, 75, of Sanford, died Wednesday (3/5/14) at Hospice of Wake County.

He was born in Halifax County, son of the late Fred James Shearin and Sally Bett Carroll Shearin. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army and U.S. Air Force.

A private memorial service will be held by the family at a later date.

He is survived by his wife, Sharon MacCarrick Shearin; children, Delores Ann Webb of Saxapahaw, Glenn Alan Shearin and wife Heidi of Sanford, William Thomas Schuman and Jack Anthony Schuman, both of Savannah, Ga., and Barbara Jean Dill of Canon City, Colo.; and seven grandchildren.
