SILER CITY — Leroy Bowden, 92, of 469 Bowden Road, Siler City, died Tuesday (6/3/14) at his home.

Funeral service will be held at 3 p.m. Saturday at Rocky River Baptist Church.

He is survived by seven children, Willie Mae Strickland (Donald), Laura Bowden-Headen (Ken), Ricky Bowden, all of Siler City; Larry Bowden (Pat), Sandra Higgins (Doug), Carolyn Nesi (Marc), all of Greensboro, and Tammy Bowden of Chapel Hill; 18 grandchildren;  15 great-grandchildren and a host of other relatives and friends.

He was preceded in death by one great-grandchild.

SILER CITY — Demetrius Elliott Headen, 38, of Siler City, died Sunday (6/1/14).

Funeral service will be held at 3 p.m. today at First Missionary Baptist Church. Burial will follow at the church cemetery.

He is survived by his children, mother, brothers, sisters and a host of other relatives and friends.

BENNETT — Kenneth Leroy Kester, 68, of 6757 Clipwood Road, Bennett, died Tuesday (6/3/14) at the Veterans Hospital in Durham.

He was a retired truck driver with Chief Express in Seagrove. He attended Pleasant Grove Christian Church, and was a U.S. Army veteran, serving two tours in the Vietnam War. He was preceded in death by his parents; sisters, Violet Holms and Virginia Hardesty; and grandson, Jonathan Morrison.

He is survived by his wife, Phyllis Donahue Kester; sons, Dwayne Daggett and wife Jennifer of Belpre, Ohio, Ron Daggett and wife Jenny of Marietta, Ohio, Todd Kabella and wife Joy of Omaha, Neb., and Michael Kabella of California; brothers, Dick Kester of Custer, S.D., Wayne Kester of Rapid City, S.D., Tom Kester of Belle Fourche, S.D., Bob Kester of Custer, S.D., Bill Kester of Belle Fourche, S.D., Raymond Kester of Rapid City, S.D., Joe Kester of Colestrip, Mont., and Gary Kester of Edgemont, S.D.; sisters, Delores Waddington of Lead, S.D., Dorothy Dean of Pringle, S.D., Donna Stratton of Simpsonville, S.C., Norma Skinner of Brent, Ala., Mary Parker of Rapid City, S.D., and Marilyn Akkerman of Hamet, Calif.; several grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews.

Visitation will be held today from 6 to 8 p.m. at Joyce-Brady Chapel in Bennett, and other times at the home.

A military graveside service will be held at a later date in Coolville, Ohio.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to Joyce-Brady Chapel, P.O. Box 89, Bennett, N.C. 27208 to help with funeral expenses.

CARTHAGE — Arthur Edwin Bryant, 85, of Carthage, died Wednesday (6/5/14) at ManorCare of Pinehurst.

A graveside service will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday at Mitchell’s Chapel United Methodist Church Cemetery in Booneville. The family will receive friends at Fry and Prickett Funeral Home in Carthage on Saturday from 4 to 6 p.m.

A native of Yadkin County, he was a son of the late Nereus and Beulah Long Bryant. He was a U.S. Army veteran serving during the Korean War. He fought in the Battle of Heartbreak Ridge and was a recipient of the Purple Heart. He received his Bachelor's and Master's degrees at N.C. State University and taught physics at Sandhills Community College for 23 years after which he retired. He was preceded in death by six sisters and one brother.

He is survived by his wife of 53 years, Wanda Hendricks Bryant; and two brothers, Albert Long Bryant of Hamptonville and Charles Hugh Bryant of Memphis.

FAYETTEVILLE — Leon Valentine, 79, of 6509 St. Louis St., Fayetteville, died Tuesday (6/3/14) at home. Arrangements are incomplete and will be announced by Cunningham & Son’s Mortuary in Fayetteville.


PITTSBORO — Funeral service for Arzalia Nettles Taylor, 85, of Pittsboro, who died Monday (6/2/14), was held at 2 p.m. Thursday at Mitchell Chapel AME Zion Church in Pittsboro with the Rev. Elizabeth Tinsley officiating. Burial was at the church cemetery.

Pallbearers were nephews. Honorary pallbearers were former NCCU football players, Ken Ingram, Marcus Smith and William Frizzell.

Arrangements were by Knotts Funeral Home.


SANFORD — Memorial service for Vincent Ross Nowell Sr., 59, of Sanford, who died Saturday (5/31/14), was conducted at 11 a.m. Thursday at the Smith Funeral Home Chapel in Broadway with the Rev. Sonny Griswold officiating. Inurnment followed at Lee Memory Gardens.

Pianist was Marvin Baccus and soloists were Mary Surles and Stephanie Mashburn.

Arrangements were by Smith Funeral Home of Broadway.
