JOHN EDGAR MORRIS

SANFORD — Funeral service for John Edgar Morris, 95, of  Sanford, who died Monday (6/17/13) was held Saturday (6/22/13) at 2 p.m. at Swann Station Baptist Church with Rev. Russell Blackmon officiating. Burial followed at Morris Chapel Cemetery with full military rites.

Pianist was Nancy Blackmon. Soloist Naomi Swann sang one song. Congregation sang one song.

Eulogy was given by granddaughters Robin Morris and Rebekah Morris.

Pallbearers were Donnie Carter, Tommy Flynn, Jeff Hollers, Steve Hollers, John Sharpe and Larry Sharpe.

Arrangements were by Bridges-Cameron Funeral Home.

  EARL GRADY GREEN SR.

APEX — Funeral service for Earl  Grady Green Sr., 58, of  Apex, who died Tuesday (6/18/13), was held Friday (6/21/13) at 5 p.m. at Mt. Pisgah Baptist Church Sanctuary with Rev. Virgil Nolen officiating.  Burial followed at the church cemetery.

Active pallbearers were Blake Farrell, Chris Hewitt, Ryan Perlowin, Jason Andrianos, Patrick Sullivan, and Mark Newcomer. Honorary pallbearers were Team Members of Smashmouth/Dirty Earl and the Boys.

Arrangements were by Bridges-Cameron Funeral Home.

  ROBERT ‘BOB’ CRIGLER

CAMERON — A service of witness to the resurrection of Robert “Bob” Crigler was held on Saturday (6/22/13) at Cameron Presbyterian Church with Rev. Whitney Wilkerson officiating.

Pianist was Mary Rush, with Soloist Rose Cooper singing “In the Garden” and “God Bless the U.S.A.” Friends and family also made tributes during the service.

Full military honors were performed following the service at the church.

Miller-Boles Funeral Home of Sanford served the family.

  ESTELLA MAE SPINKS

SILER CITY — Estella Mae Spinks, 86, of 425 E. 9th St., Siler City, died Wednesday (6/19/13) at Duke Hospice at the Meadowlands in Hillsborough.

Wake will be held from 7-8 p.m. Sunday (6/23/13) at First Missionary Baptist Church in Siler City. Funeral service will be held at 3 p.m. Monday (6/24/13) at First Missionary Baptist Church in Siler City. Burial will be in the church cemetery.

She is survived by sister-in-law Betty Spinks, brother-in-law John Scotton, four nephews, two nieces, 14 great-nieces and nephews and eight great-great nieces and nephews.

GERALD L. BARGER

SANFORD — Sergeant Major Gerald L. Barger (retired), age 72, of Sanford, N.C. died Friday, June 21, 2013, at Sanford Health & Rehabilitation Center.

Mr. Barger was born on Nov. 14, 1940, in Tuscaloosa County, Alabama to the late Henry Mack Barger and Pauline Whetstine Barger. He was the second of six children and spent his childhood in Brookwood, Alabama. He was a member of Ephesus Baptist Church.

At the age of 18, He joined the U.S. Army. Upon completing Airborne training at Fort Benning, Georgia, he was stationed at Fort Bragg, N.C. While there, he met Joyce Cole and they married two months later, on Valentine’s Day in 1960.    

During his career, he completed tours of duty in Okinawa, two tours in Vietnam with the 101st and the 1st Calvary, tours in  Italy and Germany and spent the remainder of time at Fort Bragg, N.C. He received many commendations and awards during his 30 years of service, including the Bronze Star. He was very proud of being a paratrooper and believed them to be the best troops in the world.

Upon retiring from the U.S. Army as a Sergeant Major, he worked with his brother-in law, Wayman Cole, building custom houses until his declining health forced him to retire from that profession.  He was an avid outdoorsman who loved to hunt, fish, and garden. His most prized accomplishments were serving 30 years in the U.S. Army, being married to his wife for 53 years and spending time with his grandsons.   

He is survived by his wife, Joyce Cole Barger; a daughter, Robyn Rhyne and husband Randall of Pittsboro, N.C.; two grandsons, Blaine Rhyne and Forrest Rhyne of Pittsboro, N.C.; two brothers, Deward Barger and wife Linda of Brookwood, Alabama and Bob Barger and wife Pam of Marlin, Texas; three sisters, Dean Lyons and husband Johnny of Gulf Shores, Alabama, Ann Dailey and husband Doug of Cottondale, Alabama, and Paulette Krall and husband Ernie of Genoa, Ohio; and many nieces and nephews who loved their Uncle Jerry.

The family will receive friends Sunday, June 23, 2013, from 6-8 p.m.at Bridges-Cameron Funeral Home.  The funeral will be held Monday, June 24, 2013, at 11 a.m. at Ephesus Baptist Church with Dr. David Boroughs and Chaplain Joel Cameron officiating. Burial will follow at Center United Methodist Church Cemetery.
