SANFORD — Gene Edward Bethea Sr., 85, of Sanford, died Saturday, June 29, 2013 at Central Carolina Hospital.

Memorial services will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, July 6, 2013 at St. Luke United Methodist Church.

Mr. Bethea was born in Dillon, South Carolina, son of the late Liston Fenton Bethea and Rosalie Bracey Bethea. Mr. Bethea was a member of St. Luke United Methodist Church, the Parker Sunday School Class, a retired Forester, and a U.S. Air Force Veteran.

Mr. Bethea is survived by his wife of 57 years, Jeanne Wallace Bethea; and sons, Ed and wife Rhonda of Fuquay Varina, Phillip and wife Shaun of Sanford, Mark and wife Vicki of Fuquay Varina and Ashley and wife Jane of Moncure; sisters, Edna Pate of Rowland, Betty Durham of Georgia, Hazel Canady of St. Paul, Peggy Harrelson of Fuquay Varina; brothers, Liston ”Buddy” Jr. of Georgia and Watson “Sonny” of South Carolina; 11 grandchildren, Taylor Bethea, Alexandra Bethea, Anderson Lewis, Cameron Lewis, Caroline Lewis, Bracey Bethea, Patrick Bethea, Timothy Bethea, Eleanor Bethea, Emily Bethea, and Kylie Bethea; numerous nieces and nephews.

SANFORD — Mrs. Ola Mae Baker Blakley, age 84, of Sanford, NC, died Sunday, June 30, 2013 at Wake Forest Baptist Hospital in Winston-Salem, N.C.

She was raised in East Bend, N.C. on July 3, 1928, to the late John Albert “Bud” Baker and Augusta Mae Wall Baker. In addition to her parents, she was also preceded in death by her husband, Joe Cephus Blakley Jr.; siblings, Odell Baker, Hester Smith, Frank Baker, Ray Baker Sr., and Frances Hancock; and half-siblings, Paul Baker, Chloe Baker, John William Baker, Floyd Baker, Golden Baker and Tennie Baker Lane.

Mrs. Blakley was a graduate of Sanford Business College and worked many years as the administrative assistant for Hancock Sand Company. She also farmed alongside her late husband. She was a hard-working member of Rocky Fork Christian Church — and was currently serving as the secretary for the Christian Women's Fellowship (CWF) and was a member of the church choir. She was a past Elder and Deaconess along with other leadership roles.

She is survived by daughter, Carol Jackson and husband Charles of Sanford; son, Joe Blakley III and wife Donna of Sanford; daughter, Dawn Blakley Proctor and husband Chris of Lexington; sister, Peggy Coffer of Sanford; and five grandchildren, John Jackson, Currin Blakley, Kellie Proctor, Joelle Blakley and J.C. Proctor.

The family will receive friends Wednesday, July 3, 2013 at Bridges-Cameron Funeral Home from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. and the funeral will be Thursday, July 4th at 11 a.m. at Rocky Fork Christian Church with the Rev. Kevin McHarg, the Rev. Misty Mowrey and the Rev. John Browning officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.

FAYETTEVILLE — Earl Joseph Proctor, 85, died Sunday (6/30/13) at Cape Fear Valley Medical Center.

He retired as a Master Sergeant from the U.S. Army. He served in Korea and was awarded the Combat Infantry Badge (CIB). He was the son of the late John Hodge and Patty Proctor. He was preceded in death by his wife, Frances Marie Proctor; and two sons, Donald and David Proctor.

He is survived by three sons, Danny, Mark and Robert Proctor; and four sisters, Marie Sellers and husband Horace of Lillington, Althena Perkerson and Myra Stallings, both of Spring Hope, and Katherine Whitehead of Wilmington.

A graveside service will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday at Antioch Baptist Church Cemetery in Mamers with the Rev. Jeffrey Sholar officiating.

LILLINGTON — John Tilden “Tommy” Howington Jr., 79, died Saturday (6/29/13).

He was born Jan. 20, 1934. He was preceded in death by his parents, John Tilden Howington and Bella Allen Howington; a sister, Annie Mae Langdon; his first wife, Joy Morrison Howington Hare, and his second wife, Beulah Dickens Howington. He worked at Cornell-Dubilier for 12 years and later worked at Carnes Corporation for over 32 years. He was a member of Summerville Presbyterian Church, where he taught Sunday school and served as an Elder.

He is survived by his four children, Allen Howington and wife Becky Howington, Alicia Thomas and friend Jay Norris, John Tilden Howington III and wife Kim Howington, and Jean Howington Johnson; eight grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; six stepchildren; sister, Glenda Taylor; and brother, James Howington and wife Janell Howington.

Funeral service will be conducted at 11 a.m. today at Summerville Presbyterian Church in Lillington with the Rev. Thomas K. Spence and the Rev. Harold Stone officiating. Burial will follow at the church cemetery. The family will receive friends at his home.

SILER CITY — Grover Lester Elkins, 67, of 1002 N. Second Ave., died Monday (7/1/13) at Chatham Hospital in Siler City.

Funeral service will be conducted Wednesday at 2 p.m. at Joyce-Brady Chapel with the Rev. Greg Davenport officiating.

He was a Chatham County native and attended Fall Creek Baptist Church. He was a retired auditor and owned his own company, Elkins Auditing.

He is survived by daughters, Lisa Seawell and husband Tony of Carthage, and Kristin Gillis and husband James Daniel Gillis III of High Falls; two grandchildren; sister, Carolyn Kidd of Eagle Springs; and brother, Edison Elkins of Florida.

Visitation will be today from 6 until 8 p.m. at Joyce-Brady Chapel in Bennett and other times at the home of his daughter, Lisa Seawell, 676 Seawell Road, Carthage.

SANFORD — Richard G. Carnegie Jr., 29, of 3101 Parkwood Drive, died Thursday (6/27/13) at his residence.

He is survived by his parents, Pastor Richard G. Carnegie Sr. and Co-Pastor Barbara Brewington Carnegie; one sister, Rachel C. Carnegie; two brothers, Timothy J. Carnegie (Jaleesa) and Andrew J. Carnegie; maternal grandmother, Christine Brewington; and a host of aunts, uncles, cousins and friends.

SANFORD — Funeral service for Frances Waddell Angel, 85, who died Friday (6/28/13), was held Monday at 2 p.m. at Jonesboro Heights Baptist Church with the Rev. Richard L. Wood and the Rev. Gilbert McDowell officiating. Eulogy was by Belinda Bond. Burial followed at Jonesboro Cemetery.

Pianist was the Rev. Ronnie Byrd. Soloist and pianist was Christie Field. The congregation sang two hymns.

Pallbearers were Kenneth Angel, Chris Angel, Matthew Angel, Daniel Cress, David Cress and Aaron Cress.
