DOUGLAS THOMAS STURDIVANT

BURLINGTON — Douglas Thomas Sturdivant, age 76, formerly of Sanford, died Saturday (2/15/14) at his home in Burlington.

He was born in Alamance County on October 31, 1937, to the late Harland T. Sturdivant and Pauline Michaels Sturdivant. In addition to his parents, he was also preceded in death by his sisters, Mary Lou and Libby. He served in the Air Force during the Korean War. He retired from Triangle Grading & Paving as shop foreman.

He is survived by his wife of 54 years, Juanita Lewey Sturdivant; sister, Donna Sweatt and husband Ronnie of Mebane; son, Craig Sturdivant and wife Jayne of Sanford; grandchildren, Olivia Sturdivant, and Corey Sturdivant and wife Deborah and daughter Addison.

A visitation of family and friends will be held at Rich & Thompson Funeral Home in Burlington, 306 Glenwood Ave., from 6 until 7 p.m. on Thursday (2/20/14).

HILDA PLECKER HOBSON

BLACK MOUNTAIN — Hilda Plecker Hobson, 81, of Black Mountain passed away on Saturday, February 1, 2014, at John F. Keever, Jr. Solace Center in Asheville.

She was born on January 14, 1933, in Millboro, VA. She was preceded in death by her parents, Carl G. and Della Cauley Plecker. She is survived by her beloved husband of 57 years, The Rev. Dr. J. Richard Hobson.

Hilda graduated from Montreat College in 1955, and from Old Dominion University in Norfolk, VA in 1970 with a degree in elementary education. She dedicated 50 years of her life in support of her husband's ministry as pastor of Presbyterian churches in Stanfield, NC; Grover, NC; Norfolk, VA and Sanford, NC. She taught school for 20 years in the Sanford-Lee County School System in Sanford, NC.

Hilda and her family loved the out-of-doors, and for vacations traveled in their travel trailer all over the United States, Canada, and Alaska, mainly to our national parks; hiking, back-packing, fishing, enjoying the scenery, observing wildlife, exploring the wilderness, and loving our great, beautiful countryside.

In 1994, upon retirement, Hilda and her husband moved to Black Mountain, NC, where they have resided in their country home called “Hobson's Choice.” Hilda was active in the Black Mountain Presbyterian Church, a volunteer in the Kiwanis Club Thrift Shop, and most of all hostess and cook for visits from her children, grandchildren and friends.

Hilda is survived by three sons, Dr. John R. Hobson and wife Flora of Greenwood, SC, Paul T. Hobson of Snead's Ferry, NC, and Carl P. Hobson and wife Ginny of Wake Forest, NC; two sisters, Gilma Plecker Hinton and husband Charles of Dayton, VA, and Ruth Plecker Cauley of Millboro, VA; three brothers, Wilson G. Plecker and wife Jeanette, James H. Plecker and wife Mavis, and Paul T. Plecker and wife Jean, all of Millboro, VA; sister-in-law, Louise Callaghan of Charlotte, NC; brother-in-law, Thomas Cartwright of Moab, UT; six grandchildren, David Hobson of Winston Salem, NC, Patrick Hobson of Greenwood, SC, Cauley Hobson, student at The Citadel in Charleston, SC, Cari Moessner of Sanford, NC, and John and Elizabeth Hobson of the home in Wake Forest, NC; and many nieces and nephews.

A memorial service was held at Black Mountain Presbyterian Church on Saturday, February 15, at 2:00 PM and also at the Windy Cove Presbyterian Church in Millboro, VA, at a time and date to be announced. An interment service of ashes will conclude the service in Virginia in the Plecker family burial lot in Woodland Cemetery.

BARBARA ANN PICKARD STONE

SANFORD — Barbara Ann Pickard Stone, age 63, of Sanford, NC died on Sunday, February 16, 2014 at Central Carolina Hospital in Sanford.

She was born on November 19, 1950 in Durham, NC to the late Thurmond Pickard and Blondie Edwards Pickard. Barbara attended Unity Baptist Church. She enjoyed fishing. Barbara will forever be remembered by those who loved her as a Godly woman who loved her family and everyone that she knew.

She is survived by her husband of 51 years, Samuel Stone; a daughter, Crystal Johnson and husband Kelly of Carthage; three sons: Richard Stone, Samuel Wayne Stone and Frank Stone, all of Sanford; and her brother, Jimmy Pickard and wife Betty of Sanford, NC; her grandchildren: Alexis Stone, Chelsea Stone, Henry Stone, Nicole Johnson, Jacob Johnson, Heather Gattis, Stormy McLeod, and Sam Stone.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her grandson, Cody Stone; a daughter, Sherry Renee Stone; two sisters, Brenda Holder and Denise Jackson and her aunt, Clarisa Johnson of Sanford, NC.

A funeral service will be held on Wednesday, February 19, 2013 at 6:00 p.m. at Miller-Boles Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Tim Cross officiating. The family will receive friends from 4-6 p.m. prior to the service.

DANIEL RAY SPACH

PITTSBORO — Mr. Daniel Ray Spach, 43, of 726 Millbrook Drive in Pittsboro, NC passed away Sunday, February 16, 2014 at his home.

Funeral services will be held Wednesday, February 19, 2014 at 3 p.m. at the Emmaus Baptist Church in Pittsboro, where he was a member, with Pastor Steve Moore and Rev. J.J. Ward officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery, with Military Honors provided by the Randolph County Honor Guard.

Mr. Spach was a native of Michigan, was a veteran of the Air Force where he was Navigation Systems Specialist, and also served in Operation Desert Storm. He worked several years for IBM as a Computer Engineer. Mr. Spach also loved to coach his daughter's soccer team, working in his yard, boating, and woodworking. He was a strong believer in JESUS CHRIST. He loved his family dearly and enjoyed the weekend adventures with Shelby and Julie.

Mr. Spach is survived by his wife, Julie Phillips Spach; daughter, Shelby Spach of the home; parents, Elmer and Jenny Spach of Crystal, Michigan; sisters, Brenda Spach of Pittsboro and Danette Gannon of Goose Creek, S.C.; brother, Shane Spach of Crystal, Michigan.

Visitation will be held one hour prior to the service at the church, and at other times at the home in Pittsboro.

LILLINGTON — Virginia “Faye” McCauley, 75, of Lillington, died Saturday (2/15/14).

Daughter of the late Elmer McLeod Such, she was born in Lee County. She was preceded in death by her husband, Bud McCauley; a son, Robin McCauley; and a brother, Delbert McLeod.

Funeral service was held at 12 p.m. Monday at O’Quinn-Peebles-Phillips Funeral Home and Crematory Chapel with the Rev. Robbie O’Quinn officiating.

She is survived by two daughters, Patricia Thomas and husband Gary of Broadway and Tammy McCauley of Sanford; two sons, Jeffery McCauley and wife Kelley, and Blaney McCauley, all of Lillington; two sisters, MaryAnn and Kay; two brothers, Richard and Maxey; five grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.

SANFORD — Funeral service for Marvin Ricketson, 73, of Sanford, who died Thursday (2/13/14), was held Sunday at 4 p.m. at Bridges-Cameron Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Curtis Norris officiating. Burial followed at Morris Chapel United Methodist Church Cemetery with full military rites.

Soloist was the Rev. Curtis Norris and the congregation sang. Joyce Holder played the piano during the service. A full military salute was given at the graveside.

SANFORD — Funeral service for Amy Elizabeth Smith Settle, who died Thursday (2/7/14), was held at 3 p.m. Saturday at St. Luke United Methodist Church by the Rev. Jaye White.

During the service, the congregation sang. Organist was Dianne Stanley and the soloist was Blaire Dougher. Eulogies and memories were shared by her husband, W. Graham Settle; her brother, Drew Smith, and several friends.

The trio of Bonnie Calcutt, Teresa Baker and Nancy Fields sang two songs. Helen Golson played the piano.

SANFORD — Funeral for Zelma Wicker “Sally” Mayfield, 96, of Sanford and Longwood, Fla., who died Saturday (2/8/14), was held Saturday at 3 p.m. at Flat Springs Baptist Church with Dr. Gary McCollough officiating. Burial followed at the church cemetery.

Organist was Regina Mangum. Pianist was Gail Luck. The song leader was Leonard Harris. Soloist was Kathy Seal. The congregation also sang.

Pallbearers were Ricky May, Thomas May, Jesse Walker, Tommy Luck, David Jones and Tommy F. Bridges.

The family received friends at the church fellowship hall following the funeral and graveside service.

SANFORD — Funeral service for Mary Odessa Richardson, 72, who died Friday (2/14/14), was held at 2 p.m. Sunday at Works For Christ Christian Center with Dr. Alice Hooker officiating. Burial was at Johnsonville Cemetery.

The church choir sang.

CAMERON — James “Jimmy” Victor Wisser Jr., 41, of Cameron, died Saturday (2/15/14) at Central Carolina Hospital.

He was born in McKeesport, Pa.. on Feb. 11, 1973, to James Victor and Carey Gobbel Wisser. He was employed with Static Control.

He is survived by his fiancee, Laura Ann Powell of Cameron; his parents, James Victor and Carey Gobbel Wisser of Cameron; daughter, Bryanna Lynn Wisser of Monroe; and sister, Jodi Rae Kemper of Cameron.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Russell L. and Alice Pasteur Harvey.

CARTHAGE — Alice Faye Nall Mercer, 74, of Carthage, died Sunday (2/16/14) at her home.

Funeral service will be conducted at 2 p.m. Wednesday at Emmanuel Baptist Church conducted by Pastor Eugene Ussery and Pastor John Chavis. Burial will follow at the church cemetery.

A native of Moore County, she was one of 11 children born to Jack and Alma Smith Nall. She graduated from Lenoir Community College with her CNA and worked as a private duty nurse for many years. She was preceded in death by her husband, Billy Mercer, and a daughter, Brenda Stutts.

She is survived by her children, Tommy Stutts, Felicia Phillips and husband Lee, and Billy Mercer and wife Cherri, all of Carthage; sisters, Elsie Nunnery of Carthage and Mary Brewer of Goldston; brother, Gurney Nall of High Point; eight grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren.

The family will receive friends today from 6 to 8 p.m. at Fry and Prickett Funeral Home and other times at the home.

HOMER H. FRY

CARTHAGE — Homer H. Fry, 86, of Carthage, died Sunday (2/16/14) at FirstHealth Moore Regional in Pinehurst.

Funeral service will be conducted at 11 a.m. Wednesday at Summer Hill Baptist Church conducted by the Rev. Arnold Comer. Burial will follow with Masonic Rites in the church cemetery. The family will receive friends following the service in the followship hall.

A native of Moore County, he was a son of the late Haywood and Annie Jane Harmon Fry. He retired as a correctional officer from the N.C. Department of Correction. He was preceded in death by his wife, Ilene Thomas Fry, and two brothers, Waylon and Charlie Fry.

He is survived by his daughter, Rebecca Fry and husband Dail Pope of Carthage; son, H.H. Fry of Carthage; two grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

VASS — Polly Richardson Rollins, 72, of Vass, died Sunday (2/16/14) at her home.

A celebration of life will be held Wednesday at 2 p.m. at Open Arms Community Church with Pastor John Brown and Pastor Robbie Gibson officiating. Burial will follow at Johnson Grove Cemetery in Vass.

She was born in Carthage on Aug. 17, 1941, to Willie Dolphus and Sadie Peele Richardson. She was a member of Open Arms Community Church.

She is survived by her husband, Roy Milton Rollins; two children, Robin Rollins Atkins and husband Bobby of Louisburg, and Brian Milton Rollins of Vass; three sisters, Doris Elliott of South Carolina, Johnsie Douglas of Raeford and Sally Thomas of Southern Pines; five grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Willie Dolphus and Sadie Peele Richardson; sister, Ruby Maples; and four brothers, Tommy, J.P., Gilbert, Jimmy.
