PATRICIA FOSS HICKEY

SANFORD — Patricia Foss Hickey, 92, died peacefully on Monday, June 3, 2013 at Central Carolina Hospital in Sanford, North Carolina.

Pat was born to Oscar and Anne Zerrer Foss in Wooster, Ohio on February 18, 1921, and lived her youngest years there before attending William & Mary College and finally Cornell University from which she graduated in 1942. Following graduation she joined the Navy and used her foreign language and analytical skills as a cryptographer in Washington, DC during WWII. She demobilized from the WAVES as a Lieutenant Junior Grade and married her former husband, James (Jim) Hickey. They moved to Richmond, Virginia where they began their family. The family relocated several times in conjunction with his roles in university athletics including those at Hampden Sydney, Virginia; Chapel Hill, North Carolina; and Storrs, Conn. In 1970, they moved to Sanford, NC to become part of the team developing Carolina Trace. In 1976, having raised her 4 daughters, she began work as a bookkeeper and then became a travel agent, first in Sanford and then in Chapel Hill. Travel was one of her lifelong passions as was following ACC football and basketball. She was an avid reader, keenly interested in the stock market and always willing to expand her knowledge of technology to stay in touch with friends and family and follow the Tarheels. Always an accomplished knitter, late in her life she expanded her creative talents by learning oriental Brush Stroke painting. Through her interests and engaging manner, she had many close and longtime friendships.

Her greatest love and what brought her the utmost joy in her very full life were her daughters and their families: Jill Hickey (deceased 2011) and John Meuser (Ben Meuser and Hannah Meuser), Susan Hickey and Sheldon Klapper, Anne Hickey and Matt Greenhalgh, Lynn Hickey Knight and Russ Knight (Foss Knight and Aubrey Knight). Their love of her and their loss is felt deeply and abidingly.

A receiving will be held at Miller-Boles Funeral Home in Sanford, North Carolina on Thursday, June 6 from 5:00 to 7:00 PM. There will be a private interment.

In lieu of flowers, a donation to the Humane Society would be deeply appreciated.

HEATHER LORENE WALSER

SANFORD — Heather Lorene Walser, 21, died Sunday (6/2/13) at UNC Hospitals.

She was born on Oct. 4, 1991, in Salisbury to Henry Davis Walser Jr. and Donna Rae Hill Walser.

In addition to her parents, she is survived by her brother, Henry Davis Walser III of North Myrtle Beach, S.C., and grandfather, Henry Davis Walser, also of North Myrtle Beach, S.C.

The family will receive friends today from 6 until 8 p.m. at Bridges-Cameron Funeral Home. Funeral service will be conducted Thursday at 2 p.m. in the chapel of Bridges-Cameron Funeral Home with Chaplain Joel Cameron presiding.

Burial will follow Friday at noon at the Grubb Family Cemetery in Lexington.

LESSIE LEE THOMAS DINKINS

SANFORD — Funeral service for Lessie Lee Thomas Dinkins, 90, who died Saturday (6/1/13), was held Monday at 7 p.m. at the Sanford Church of God with the Rev. David Kimbrell and Pastor Eugene Powers officiating. A trio consisting of Kellan, Jenna and Landry Overton (great-grandchildren) sang and gave remembrances of their great-grandmother.

Britton Altman was the pianist, Anita Leggette played the keyboard, Ernie Sharpe played the trumpet, Samantha Lane played the saxophone, Caryn Keith played the violin and Trey Phillips played the drums. The Sanford Church of God Choir, led by music minister Trent Archer, sang several selections. Soloist was the Rev. David Kimbrell accompanied by the church choir. Tim Preble ran the sound system.

Pallbearers were Steven Dinkins, Tim Dinkins, Joshua Dinkins, Michael Nelson, Christian Mock, Forrest Overton, Chris Marks and Brooks Overton.

A graveside service was held Tuesday at 11 a.m. at Lee Memory Gardens. Those attending the service sang at the graveside.

MARCELLA M. ALLEN

SANFORD — Marcella M. Allen, 56, of 5012 Valley View Drive, died Monday (6/3/13) at UNC Hospital in Chapel Hill.

She is survived by her husband, Robert Earl Allen; two daughters, Alisha Allen and Anita Allen; her mother, Arlene Malloy; three grandchildren; two brothers, Eugene Malloy of San Antonio, Texas, and James H. Malloy of Durham; one sister-in-law, Hattie Petty of Sanford; three brothers-in-law, John Henry, Paul Allen and Robert Petty, all of Sanford; son-in-law, Jermal Hicks of New York; and a host of other relatives and friends.

Funeral service will be conducted at 2 p.m. Thursday at Works For Christ Christian Center. Burial will follow at Lee Memory Gardens.

SOUTHERN PINES — George Fortner, 91, died Monday (6/3/13).

Funeral service will be conducted at 2 p.m. Thursday at Pleasant Hill Baptist Church.

Visitation will follow in the church’s multi-purpose building.

JAMES EARL WHITE

ROBBINS — James Earl “Red” White, 58, of 240 Big Horn Road, died Sunday (6/2/13) at home.

He was born in Chatham County on June 25, 1954, to Russell Sr. and Lois White. He was preceded in death by his father, Russell White, and a sister, Gladys White.

He is survived by his wife of 29 years, Kathy Caddell White; three sons, Jamarious White (Kimberly) of Thomasville, Christopher White of Robbins and Ryan White of Greensboro; his mother, Lois White of Sanford; four brothers, Joe White and Larry White, both of Sanford, Russell White (Vicki) of Seagrove and Nathaniel White of Atlanta, Ga; and two grandsons.

Funeral service will be held at 1 p.m. today at Bellview AME Zion Church in Robbins. Burial will follow at the Alston Chapel Church Cemetery in Sanford. Visitation will be held from 12 noon until the funeral hour at the church.

JERRY ALLEN HANNON

VASS — Jerry Allen Hannon, 70, died Monday (6/3/13) at his home.

He was born in Quewhiffle on Feb. 10, 1943, to William David and Mamie Allen Hannon. He worked as an electrician for Pinehurst Surgical Clinic. He was preceded in death by his parents.

He is survived by his life partner, Florence Smith; two daughters, Denise P. Duddey and husband Rodger, and Stephanie Peterson, all of Vass; two sons, Tony Hannon of Emerald Isle and Hershal Smith of Southern Pines; two brothers, Joe Hannon and wife Pam of Goldston, and David Hannon and wife Grace of Southern Pines; four grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

All services will be private.

SANFORD — Jarrett “Spanky” Garfield Bray, 47, died Friday (5/31/13) at his residence.

He was born in McDowell County on March 15, 1966.

He is survived by his father, Robert Hollis Bray Jr.; and two brothers, Michael J. Bray and Robert Hollis Bray, III and wife Virginia, all of Sanford.

A memorial service will be held Sunday at Solid Rock United Methodist Church in Cameron following the 11 a.m. church service with Pastor Gil Wise officiating.

RUBY DORIS NICKENS COX

SANFORD — Graveside service for Ruby Doris Nickens Cox, 86, who died Sunday (6/2/13), was conducted Tuesday at 2 p.m. at St. Andrews Presbyterian Church cemetery with Chaplain Joel Cameron presiding. The family received friends in the church fellowship hall following the graveside service.

SANFORD — Funeral service for Billy S. Bost, 61, who died Saturday (6/1/13), was held at 2 p.m. Tuesday at Jonesboro Baptist Church by the Rev. Gilbert McDowell, the Rev. Richard L Wood and the Rev. Matt Martin. A private committal service was held prior to the funeral service.

During the service, the congregation sang, pianist was Kimberly Davidson and soloist was the Rev. Ronnie Byrd. The Rev. Matt Martin gave the eulogy.

Pallbearers were Daniel Bost, Danny Bost, Jim Bost, Mike Buchanan, Darren Griffin and Harald Heymann.

MAXINE CONE SENTER

CARY — Maxine Cone Senter, 84, formerly of Lillington, died Monday (6/3/13).

She was born Sept. 2, 1928, in Nash County. A graduate of Spring Hope High School, she attended Woman’s College (now the University of North Carolina at Greensboro). After her husband’s death, she moved to Raleigh. She was a member of the Lillington Baptist Church, the Figure Eight Island Church and the Ridge Road Baptist Church in Raleigh. She was preceded in death by her husband, Meredith S. Senter; her parents, Braxton and Virginia Cone; brothers, Bourbon Cone and John Cone; and her sister, Ann Cone Turner.

She is survived by her three sons and daughters-in-law, Meredith Jr. and Susan of Arlington, Va., Michael and Nancy of Cary; and Max and Elisabeth of Wellesley, Mass.; four grandchildren; one sister, Faye Swofford of Bluffton, S.C.; two sisters-in-law, Bettye Senter of Raleigh and Gladys Cone of Spring Hope; eight nieces and nephews, and many other family members.

A memorial service will be held Friday at 11 a.m. at the Lillington Baptist Church in Lillington, with luncheon immediately following the service.

ARLIE G. WRIGHT

SANFORD — Arlie G. Wright, 84, died Monday (6/3/13) at Hospice at the Meadowlands in Hillsborough.

Funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday at Cool Springs Baptist Church. Burial will follow at the church cemetery.

He was born in Surry County, son of the late Henry Franklin Wright and Tennie Cedella Edwards Wright. He was a member of Cool Springs Baptist Church and the Senior Men’s Sunday School Class. He retired from Allied Chemical and was preceded in death by his wife, Mary Elizabeth Hudson Wright; a son, Glenn Wright; and a brother, Henry Grady Wright.

He is survived by one daughter, Deborah Womack and husband Ben of Sanford; five grandchildren and one great-grandchild.

The family will receive friends from 6 until 8 p.m. today at Rogers-Pickard Funeral Home.
