ELIZABETH JOAN GRIFFIN

SOUTHPORT —  Elizabeth Joan Griffin, age 79, of Southport, N.C., died Saturday, May 31, 2014 at New Hanover Regional Medical Center, Wilmington, N.C.

She was born on September 4, 1934 in Harnett County, N.C., the daughter of the late Flynn Rosser and Catherine Black Rosser and was preceded in death by her husband, William "Billy" Griffin. She was a longtime member of Oak Island Presbyterian Church. She was a retired office manager with CP&L.

Surviving are a daughter, Sue Perry and husband, Bill of Fayetteville, NC; five grandchildren, David, Rachel, Trey, Angela and Rebecka; four great-grandchildren, Emily, Cameron, Grace and Madison; a brother, Bobby Rosser of Olivia, N.C.; four sisters, Mabel McDuffie, Mary Catherine Thomas, Lillian Barrett, all of Sanford, N.C., and Darcus Akers of Newport, News, VA.

Funeral services will be held on Friday, June 6, 2014 at 3 p.m. at Oak Island Presbyterian Church with Pastor Walter Taylor officiating. Interment will follow Monday, June 9, 2014 at 11 a.m. at The Fort Bragg Post Cemetery, Fayetteville, N.C.

The family will receive friends on Thursday evening from 7:00 until 8:30 at Peacock-Newnam &White Funeral Service, 1411 N. Howe Street, Southport.

OSCAR PHILLIP MARSH

SANFORD — Oscar Phillip “Pete” Marsh, age 84, of Sanford, went to be with the Lord Sunday, June 1, 2014, with his family by his side.

Pete was born on September 26, 1929, in Carthage, to the late Oscar Dillard Marsh and Mamie Matthews Marsh. He was preceded in death by a brother, Alec Marsh. He was a member of Cool Springs Baptist Church, where he served as a deacon. He served his country for two years during the Korean War. He worked at Roberts Company for 20 years, and retired from Moen Company after 20 years. Pete was a member of Central Carolina Antique Power and Equipment Club, where he shared his love of John Deere tractors.

Pete is survived by his wife Joyce Marsh, son Rodney Marsh (Melinda) of Sanford, daughter Becky Schiller (Mike) of Scottsdale, AZ, sister Audrey McPherson of Cameron, brother Dwight Marsh of Sanford, grandchildren Phillip Marsh (Amy) and Spencer Berube of Sanford, Andrew Schiller of Brooklyn, NY, and Kelsey Schiller of Scottsdale, AZ.

The family will receive friends Wednesday, June 4, at Cool Springs Baptist Church Fellowship Hall, at 10:00. Services will follow at 11:00 in the sanctuary, with the Rev. Ira Sutton and the Rev. Matthew Martin officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.

Pete had requested that, in lieu of flowers, donations be made to the Building Fund at Cool Springs Baptist Church, 1313 Cool Springs Road, Sanford, NC 27330.

NEIL FRANKLIN CURRENS

SANFORD — Neil Franklin Currens, 82, passed away peacefully Thursday, May 29, 2014.

Born on December 16, 1931 in Oak Park, Illinois, Neil was the son of the late Ray Franklin Currens and Mae Siler. Neil graduated from Proviso High School, Maywood, IL. He graduated from Elmhurst College, Elmhurst, IL with a bachelor’s degree in business. He served in the U.S. Army, Infantry during the Korean War with the rank of 1st Lt. Most of his business career was in sales with the makers of Lysol Products.

Neil served on the Hillsdale, NJ Town Council; he was a deacon at Wyckoff Reformed Church, Wyckoff, NJ; he served for 8 years in the Yokefellow Prison Ministry of North Carolina and volunteered at Christian United Outreach Center, Sanford. He also served on the North Shore Architectural Committee at Carolina Trace.

Neil is survived by his loving wife of 61 years, Connie (Kocur) Currens; his daughter, Laurie Badone and husband Ron, of Mahwah, NJ; his son, John and wife Christine of Woodcliff Lake, NJ; his grandson, 2nd Lt. Ryan Franklin Currens and wife Victoria and his granddaughter, Lauryn Nicole Currens.

His sister, Marjorie Currens Proctor, predeceased him.

The family thanks the staff at Parkview for their loving and kind care; also Community Hospice for their support and loving care.

In lieu of flowers, donations to Christian United Outreach Center or Trinity Lutheran Church or a charity of your choice in Neil's memory would be appreciated.

A memorial service will be held at Trinity Lutheran Church, 525 Carthage St., Sanford, NC, on Saturday, June 7th. Burial at a later date at Indiantown Gap Military Cemetery, Annville, Pa.

ABERDEEN — Ebony Laverne Brown, 30, of Aberdeen,  died Friday (5/30/14) at her residence.

She is survived by her grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. Fred Fox, Mr. and Mrs. John Richmond and Annie Brown; her sister, Cherrell Richmond; Godparents, Pastors Harrison and Kathy Ray, Ministers Terry and Naomi Robertson; two nieces; and a host of aunts, uncles, relatives and friends.

VINCENT ROSS NOWELL SR.

SANFORD — Vincent Ross Nowell Sr., 59, of Sanford, died Saturday (5/31/14) at UNC Hospitals in Chapel Hill.

He was born on April 15, 1955, son of the late Thornton Benjamin Nowell and Thelma Rickman Nowell. He was preceded in death by his parents and one brother.

Memorial services will be conducted at 11 a.m. Thursday at the Smith Funeral Home Chapel in Broadway with the Rev. Sonny Griswold officiating. Inurnment will follow at the Lee Memory Gardens.

He is survived by his wife, Christine Patricia Miller Nowell; daughter, Stephanie Baker (Eddie) of Smithfield; son, Vincent Ross Nowell Jr. of Sanford; sister, Alice Nowell Craddock of Williamston; brother, Charles Nowell of Durham; and five grandchildren.

The family will receive friends from 10 to 11 a.m. Thursday at the Smith Funeral Home in Broadway, one hour prior to the memorial service.

SANFORD — Funeral service for Rickie Wesley Hall, 65, of Sanford, who died Thursday (5/29/14), was held Monday at 11 a.m. at New Life Fellowship Church with Dr. Gail Dickens and Pastor Dale Sauls officiating. Burial followed at the church cemetery.

Recorded music was played.

Pallbearers were Lewis Marshburn, Brandon Honeycutt, Shane Wilson, Mike Holder, Eddie Thomas and James Thomas.

The family received friends at the family home following the burial.

SILER CITY — Justin Thomas Brown, 44, of 280 James Caviness Road, Siler-City, died Saturday (5/31/14) at UNC Hospital in Chapel Hill.

Funeral services will be conducted Wednesday at 2 p.m. at Pleasant Grove Christian Church in Bennett with the Rev. Mark Strickland and the Rev. Neal Jackson officiating.

He was born in Conway, S.C., and had retired as a Bridge Repairman with the N.C. Dept. of Transportation. He was preceded in death by his sons, Trevor-Tate and Zimiriah Brown.

He is survived by his wife, Teressa Jordan Brown; sons, Chris Brown, Trent Brown and Curtis Brown of Siler City; mother, Barbara Brady of Asheboro; father, Richard Brown and stepmother Anne of Pittsboro; sister, Holly Brown Hussey and husband Jonathan of Robbins; stepsister, Debbie Mullis of Lexington; stepbrothers, Billy Leviner and wife Sheila of Chapel Hill, Andy Leviner and wife Lisa of Chapel Hill, and John Leviner of Lexington.

Visitation will be held today from 6 to 8 p.m. at Joyce-Brady Chapel in Bennett, and other times at the home of Holly and Jonathan Hussey at 632 Caviness Town Road in Robbins.

BROADWAY — Funeral service for Calvin Jones Cox Sr., 85, of Broadway, was held Sunday at 3 p.m. at Jonesboro Presbyterian Church with the Rev. John Taylor and the Rev. W.T. Perkins officiating. Burial followed at Broadway Town Cemetery with military rites.

Pianist was Sandra Hancock. Organist was Pam Beal. Soloist was Pam Beal. The Jonesboro Presbyterian Church Choir sang and the congregation sang.

Pallbearers were Drew Cox, Preston Cox, Owen Bussey III, Ashley Beal, Roy Cox Jr. and Tommy Matthews.

BROADWAY — Callie Buchanan Wilson, 75, of Broadway, died Sunday (6/1/14) at Central Carolina Hospital.

She was born in Harnett County, daughter of the late Edgar Jefferson Buchanan and Beulah Hallman Buchanan. She was preceded in death by her parents and her sister, Beatrice Adams. She retired from nursing after 30 years of service and was a member of the Holly Springs Baptist Church.

Funeral service will be conducted at 3 p.m. Thursday at Holly Springs Baptist Church with the Rev. Jerry Parsons and the Rev. Wayne O'Quinn officiating. Burial will follow at the church cemetery.

She is survived by her sons, David Yarborough, Allen Marion, Danny Marion, Tim Marion (Santa) and Connie Marion, all of Broadway; sisters, Geneva Key of Broadway and Faye Richardson of Sanford; 10 grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.

SANFORD — Funeral service for Robert Drumheller, 77, of Sanford, who died Tuesday (5/27/14), was held Monday at 11 a.m. at Barbecue Presbyterian Church with the Rev. Sandy Williams officiating. Burial followed at the church cemetery.

Pianist was Carolyn Shaw. Organist was Tom Shaw. The congregation sang and a CD of special music was played.

Pallbearers were Ronald Butensky, Pat Cameron, Kristopher King, Frankie Spivey, Ben Thomas and John Wells.

LILLINGTON — Latracia “Trish” Ballard, 60, of Lillington, died Sunday (6/1/14).

She was born in Coles County, Ill., on July 1, 1953 to the late Lewis Edward and Winifred Stewart Matteson. She was also preceded in death by a brother, Ed.

A graveside service will be held at 4 p.m. Wednesday at Harnett Memorial Park with the Rev. Cary Snelling officiating. The family will receive friends from 2 to 4 p.m. at O’Quinn-Peebles-Phillips Funeral Home and all other times at his home.

She is survived by three sons, Steve McWhorter and wife Lisa of Sanford, Mark Sr. and wife Margie, and Glenn and wife Megan, all of Lillington; three sisters, Anita, Connie and Dorene; a brother, Louis; and 10 grandchildren.

DURHAM — Lee T. Sellars, 97, of Durham, formerly of Vass, died Saturday (5/31/14) at Duke Hock Family Pavilion.

He attended school in Vass and Carthage. He continued his education at Blackwell Business College and the school of barbering in Washington, D.C. While living in Vass, he was a member of Allens Chapel AME Zion Church. He later joined St. Mark AME Zion Church in Durham. He worked at Lee County Hospital prior to serving in the U.S. Army.

Funeral service will be conducted at 12 p.m. Thursday at St. Mark A.M.E. Zion Church in Durham. Interment will follow at Lee Memory Gardens. The family will receive friends from 11 a.m. to 12 p.m. Thursday at the church one hour prior to the service and all other times at 5106 Old Well St.

He is survived by his Godson, David T. Sellars Sr. (Gloria); two brothers; four sisters; and a host of nieces, nephews and other relatives and friends.

LOUISE WILLIS MENICHELLA

LILLINGTON — Louise Willis Menichella, 71, formerly of Pinebluff, died Sunday (6/1/14) at her home.

A graveside service will be held at 11 a.m. on Friday at Pinebluff Cemetery.

Born Nov. 2, 1942, in Hoke County, she was a daughter of the late Andy and Annie Hutchins Ayers. She was preceded in death by two daughters, Melinda Willis and Diann Carter.

She is survived by her son, Eddie Menichella of Lillington; three sisters, Thelma Wood of Pinebluff, Peggy Pilson of Washington, and Geraldine Timbers of Aberdeen; one brother, Jerry Ayers of Greenville; and two grandchildren.

CARTHAGE — Judy Blue Riddle, 61, of Carthage, died Sunday (6/1/14) at FirstHealth Moore Regional Hospital in Pinehurst.

Funeral service will be conducted at 2 p.m. Wednesday at Eureka Presbyterian Church conducted by the Rev. Edward Boyce. Burial will follow at the church cemetery. The family will receive friends following the service in the fellowship hall.

A native of Moore County, she was a daughter of the late Thomas Elwin and Opal Chriscoe Blue. She was a graduate of Mitchell’s School of Cosmetology in Raleigh. She worked as a daycare operator for most of her life. She began working with her mother at Jack and Jill Day Care and later worked for Christian Child Development Center for several years before opening her own in-home day care.

She is survived by her husband of 40 years, William “Billy” Riddle; daughter, Amy Spivey and husband John of Sanford; son, Travis Blue of Sanford; brothers, Thomas E. Blue Jr. and wife Michelle of Carthage, and Daniel Blue of West End; two grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

The family will receive friends at the residence of Tommy and Michelle Blue.
